Organization Description:

Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp provides “a different kind of healing” to thousands of children with serious illnesses and their families annually – all completely free of charge. For many of these children and families, Hole in the Wall provides multiple Camp experiences throughout the year at the facility in Ashford, Conn, in dozens of hospitals and clinics, directly in camper homes and communities and through other outreach activities across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Position Description:

We are seeking three (3) Full-Time AmeriCorps members for the 2025-2026 service year to serve as Program Specialists. These AmeriCorps positions are enrolled through the Salisbury University ShoreCorps program.

The AmeriCorps Program Specialists will be key program leaders at our new program location in Queenstown, Maryland. They will be part of the leadership team and provide support to the seasonal program counselors, aid in the preparation of the new facility, and be responsible for the set up and facilitation of Camp program areas.

Depending on skills and interests, Program Specialists will either spend a portion of their work week assisting in the maintenance of the site with our facilities department or providing office management. Program specialists should expect their role to change throughout the calendar year based on the current needs of the new location.


Our AmeriCorps Maryland Program Specialist can expect to…

  • Participate in required on-site orientation and individual program trainings.
  • Assist in planning and facilitating seasonal staff orientations and specific program area orientations.
  • Take on a progressing leadership role in family weekend programing.
  • Assist in the compilation of necessary certifications for program staff in the following areas: Pool, Archery, and Adventure. Additionally, be trained in as many of these areas as possible.
  • Plan, implement, and facilitate intentional, adaptable, and outcome-based programming for children and families of all abilities and ages.
  • Assure program areas remain safe, organized and stocked throughout the program calendar.
  • Assist the facilities department in maintenance of the site.
  • Assist in volunteer department in hosting volunteer groups as needed.
  • Assist in the admissions department in recruiting families as needed.
  • Assist in managing the Camp office with phone calls and email responses as needed.
  • Organize and facilitate all-camp activities alongside the rest of the Program Team.
  • Be prepared to lead and organize a variety of creative games and activities for rainy days and downtime.
  • Help create and foster an environment that promotes inclusivity, safety, and participation.
  • Learn and help lead communication about program needs, program development, and weather plans.
  • Commit to fostering a community that celebrates our Camp values, which are inclusion, gratitude, possibility, friendship, and safety.
  • Must be familiar with and enforce all safety, emergency, and Camp policies.
  • Be on call overnight, and residential during assigned program weekends.
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary by Camp leadership.

Our AmeriCorps Maryland Program Specialist should have...

  • Experience with and/or an understanding of residential camp programming preferred but not required.
  • Coursework in a related field is desirable, but there is no minimum education requirement.
  • The ability to provide a copy of either high school diploma, GED, or college transcript.
  • The ability to establish positive relationships with a variety of people in multicultural environments.
  • The ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a team.
  • The ability to be able to relate to diverse populations.
  • A strong interest in serving the community.
  • Must be physically and mentally capable of working with children and teen campers as well as their adult caregivers.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills; including written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • The ability to multi-task and prioritize workday/projects independently.
  • A familiarity with key software and database resources (e.g. Office 365 suite, Sharepoint, Salesforce, etc.) and adaptable digital skills.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or lawful permanent resident alien.
  • The ability to commit to one year of full-time 40 hours a week from Sept. 2025 - August 2026.
  • The ability to attend the free, AmeriCorps class at SU on alternate Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • The ability to successfully pass a comprehensive Criminal History Check, which includes FBI fingerprinting.
  • Have reliable transportation.
  • A valid Driver's license and driving record which meets Camp insurance carrier requirements.
  • The ability to work outdoors in hot and cold weather conditions.
  • The ability to frequently lift up to 25 pounds.

Benefits available to the AmeriCorps Member:

  • A bi-weekly stipend of $1,062.
  • An education award of $7,395 for future educational expenses or repayment of student loans - members who are age 55 orolder may gift their ed. award to a child or grandchild.
  • Federal student loan forbearance while in service, with exemption from paying interest accrued during that time.
  • 8 tuition-free credits at Salisbury University for completion of training course.
  • Health insurance and child care reimbursement, if eligible.
  • Camp will provide, optional shared housing onsite during the year of service.
