The Holland Board of Public Works (HBPW) is seeking a part-time Communications Specialist to job share communications and marketing duties with another part-time employee. This opportunity is envisioned as a 20-hour per week position with most of the work performed in-person at the utility’s Service Center in Holland, Michigan.

Communications Specialist
Reports to: Communications Manager
Job Summary: This position is responsible for the design and development of utility marketing plans, content for promotional campaigns, and educational materials that effectively inform external and internal audiences about HBPW value propositions, programs, and services.
Essential Duties
- Develop professional print and electronic brochures, reports, flyers, bill inserts, advertising, displays, news releases, presentations, community outreach events.
- Manage the Holland BPW web sites and social media content
- Promote and participate in the planning of community outreach events
- Collaborates with internal customers to identify communication needs and designs marketing and communication programs responsive to those needs.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of communication materials and develop customer program marketing communication plans, timelines and tasks.
- Write and proofread copy for communication materials and coordinate necessary photographic and video graphic resources.
- Maintain HBPW graphic standards.
- Serve as backup to the Education & Visitor Programs Specialist.
- Perform all other tasks as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Business or related field; or equivalent education and experience.
- Experience in graphic design, web design, copywriting, and social media content creation.
- Knowledge of print, broadcast and web production.
- Working knowledge of desktop publishing software, word processing, database, and spreadsheet software along with Microsoft Office products.
- Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
- Knowledge of CMS website management (Joomla, WordPress)
- Effective oral and written communication skills; excellent writing and proofreading skills.
- Ability to remain confidential when needed and to handle sensitive information.
- Ability to frequently handle situations requiring attention to detail and deal with the concerns of citizens.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least three years’ experience in marketing or corporate communications.
- Familiarity with an electric utility.
- Effective workplace skills as demonstrated through WorkKeys assessments (Workplace Documents – 5, Applied Math – 5, Graphic Literacy – 5).
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Ability to work occasional off hours (evenings and Saturdays) due to events and other activities. (Typically up to five times per year with advance scheduled notice).
- Normal office environment with minimum discomfort due to noise, dirt and dust.
- Physical ability to occasionally lift/carry/transport items weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Mental ability to frequently handle pressures related to working on multiple projects requiring attention to detail.
