Under the general direction of the Parks and Cemetery Deputy Director, leads a department engaged in urban forestry designed to enhance the City’s beauty and image.
The pay range for this position is CM-J ($30.35-$36.43), starting at Step 1: $30.35 per hour.

- Monitors and evaluates the health and vigor of the City’s urban forest and recommends action to address disease, pest concerns, construction impacts, etc.
- Supervises, assigns work, instructs, and participates in the activities of a group of Tree Trimmers engaged in planting, trimming, and removing trees and shrubs.
- Determines the proper method of removal of damaged and/or diseased trees.
- Establishes proper safety precautions and procedures for the Forestry crew and ensures that they are followed.
- Oversees tree planting and maintenance, including specifying number of trees to be ordered, determining the proper tree varieties to plant, and designating areas to be planted.
- Utilizes tablets and technology to maintain the digital inventory of the city’s urban forest, create work orders necessary for the optimal health of the urban forest.
- Assists with park and cemetery maintenance, including annual Tulip Planting operation.
- Maintains good public relations with City residents and handles inquiries concerning work being performed. Assists with handling complaints and concerns from the public relating to forestry operation.
- Answers inquiries of the public relating to forestry operation.
- Regularly performs the duties of the Tree Trimmers.
- Operates all equipment assigned to the tree crew, including extensive bucket work, chippers, and various saws.
- Oversees and participates in general labor or maintenance duties such as carpentry projects as necessary.
- Continue with educational classes, certifications, and training as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- The job requires knowledge normally acquired through the completion of an Associate’s Degree in Urban Forestry, Horticulture, or a related field. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Two to four years’ experience in urban forestry, including hazardous tree/pest/disease identification and treatment, tree planting, trimming, and removal.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to manage the activities of a small, diverse group of employees and work productively with all levels of City personnel and the general public.
- Supervisory skills necessary to effectively manage the daily operations and administration of assigned function.
- Mental ability to handle pressures related to simultaneously managing multiple projects and dealing with the concerns of citizens.
- Physical ability to frequently lift/push/pull/transport equipment and materials weighing up to 100 pounds. Ability to frequently climb/bend/stoop/reach to accommodate different working positions.
- Ability to work courteously and effectively with the public.
- Must possess Class B CDL driver’s license.
- Work includes outside working conditions with frequent exposure to extreme hot or cold weather conditions.
- Work includes frequent exposure to fumes, odors, dust, dirt, noise, and moving objects.
- Work includes periodic exposure to environmental hazards associated with electrical, mechanical and/or power equipment.
- Work includes some extended hour shifts, alternate work schedules, weekend and holiday work as needed.
- Availability to respond to weather related and other emergency situations when contacted.
