JOB SUMMARY :
Under general direction, provide a variety of classroom or one-to-one instructional activities in a general education or special education setting, including preparing educational materials, tutoring, and conducting intensified learning experiences. Receive supervision from the school administrator(s) and / or designee within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Perform a variety of clerical and supportive tasks; make routine decisions within the established policies and procedures of the classroom, school and district.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Assists instructional personnel in planning a course of action and lesson plans.
Tutors individual and small groups of students to reinforce and follow up on specific learning activities.
Supervises individual students or small groups of students in practice activities such as mathematics, spelling, computers, language and other programs as requested.
Supervises classroom, playground, assembly and student activities as directed. Assists students in reviewing homework assignments and / or regular tests.
Directs students into safe activities and in the development of appropriate social behavior using positive reinforcement strategies and techniques.
Arranges for and operates audio-visual equipment, office machinery, computers and other instructional equipment.
Prepares instructional and visual aids such as posters, charts and stencils upon request of supervisor.
Assists in the maintenance of student records and files; performs related office duties, including lunch count and record keeping.

Administers tests, scores and records test results as requested.
Maintains, collects and distributes an inventory of textbooks, supplies and equipment.
Collects and assembles resource materials, catalogs and keeps records current.
Accompanies classes on field trips and monitors student behavior.
Attends meetings relating to curriculum content, IEP development, or student related problems and participates in parent conferences as requested.
Supervises students in the "in house" program at the middle school.
Provides assistance to auxiliary staff, with supervisor's approval.
Consults with supervising teacher on daily basis for current and future projects.
Assists in maintaining an orderly and attractive learning environment.
Administers first aid, if necessary.
Maintains regular attendance.
Works cooperatively with parents, students, and staff.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS :
Training and Experience : Any combination of training and experience which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed herein. Completion of the 12th grade or the equivalent of a high school education; one year of paid or volunteer experience working with children in an educational environment or child care setting. A year of college with course work in Psychology, Child Growth and Development, or Education may be substituted for the one year of experience working with children.
Knowledge : Knowledge of elementary education concepts, child growth and development and child behavior characteristics; instructional materials used at specific grade levels; curriculum content and objectives; application of curriculum and
instructional objectives for children; positive student behavior management techniques and strategies; English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar; basic arithmetic concepts, simple record keeping, record management and computer usage. Instructional Assistants assigned to a Resource Specialist or Speech and Language Therapist should have knowledge of a variety of disabling conditions and an understanding of the need to provide accommodations and modifications to the curriculum / instruction.
Abilities : Ability to instruct and plan learning activities under the guidance of the classroom teacher; perform simple clerical tasks and operate standard office machines, communicate, understand and carry out oral and written directions; demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward children; meet requirements associated with the tasks outlined in the position description; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties. Instructional assistants assigned to RSP or LSH must have ability to provide accommodations and modifications when requested by supervising teacher.
Physical Effort / Work Environment : Moderate physical effort which may include frequent standing, walking, lifting and occasional climbing or stooping; use of medium weight tools and materials; indoor / outdoor work environment. A pre-placement physical examination may be required.
Licenses and Certificates : A valid First Aid and CPR certificate may be required.
Requirements / Qualifications
High School Diploma or G.E.D. Equivalency required. Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education or possess A.A. degree, or 48 units. Bilingual Test as needed.
