Para-Professional – SPECIAL EDUCATION III (includes physically handicapped assignments) JOB SUMMARY:Under general direction, provide a variety of instructional and clerical activities in a special class or for individual students with moderate to severe disabilities. Receive supervision from the school administrator and/or designee within a framework of standard policies and procedures; tutor under guidelines of classroom teacher; assist in the conduct of intensified learning experiences related to students with special needs; make routine decisions within the established policies and procedures of the classroom and the district. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:*Successfully complete the required authorized levels of training within 6 months ofemployment.* Maintains all appropriate/required levels of trainings and certificates.* Attend to medical procedures (after receiving appropriate training and authorization) including, catheterization, tracheostomy suctioning, medications, seizures, diabetics, asthma and tubefeeding as needed. Works with special education students both in the classroom and the community. Assists with the development, preparation and presentation of instructional activities including academics, recreation, leisure, self-care, vocational training, and community training as appropriate for the level of the students.  Tutors individual students and small groups of students to reinforce and follow up on learning activities.  Assists in the management and shaping of student behavior through the use of positive behavior intervention strategies.  Observes behavior of students to see that they do not injure themselves or others; notes students’ progress. Assists students with personal hygiene and grooming including taking them to the bathroom, changing diapers, assisting with changing clothes, washing hands and face, hair care, and dental care.Operates a variety of instructional media and equipment and maintains an inventory of textbooks, supplies and equipment. Provides a variety of clerical and supportive tasks. Attends to physical needs of students including providing assistance with adaptive equipment, braces, walkers, wheelchairs, standing tables, etc. and lifting students from wheel chairs to other seating arrangements. Maintains student records and files and, upon request, attends meetings and parent conferences, including home visits and IEP meetings related to curriculum and/or student-related problems. Understands and applies guidelines involved in confidentiality of student records. Assists students with motor skill activities including balancing, throwing, catching, running, sports and games. Maintains regular attendance. Works cooperatively with parents, students, and staff. Performs other related duties as assigned. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:  Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed herein. Completion of the 12th grade or the equivalent of a high school education; one year of paid or volunteer experience working with children in a Special Education environment.  A year of college with course work in Special Education, Psychology, and Child Growth and Development may be substituted for a year of experience working with children. Forty (40) hours of training in specialized areas, (i.g. speech, behavior) must be pre-approved by Administrator in Special Education, Bilingual/biliterate (language of need) qualifications required. Knowledge: Knowledge of typical and atypical child growth and development and child behavior characteristics; instructional materials used at grade level; curriculum content and objectives; application of curriculum to students with special needs; positive student behavior management techniques and strategies; English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar; basic arithmetic concepts; simple record keeping, record management, and computer usage. Physical Effort/Work Environment: Moderate to heavy physical effort which may include frequent standing, walking, lifting and occasional climbing, crawling or stooping, use of medium weight tools and materials; indoor/outdoor work environment. A pre-placement physical examination may be required. Abilities: Ability to instruct and plan learning activities under the guidance of the classroom teacher; perform simple clerical tasks and operate standard office machines; communicate, understand and carry out oral and written directions in a specific second language (language of need) and English; demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward children; meet requirements associated with the tasks outlined in the position description; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties. Ability to deliver instructional modifications and accommodations as requested for individual students. Physical Effort/Work Environment: Moderate to heavy physical effort which may include frequent standing, walking, lifting and occasional climbing, crawling or stooping, use of medium weight tools and materials; indoor/outdoor work environment. A pre-placement physical examination may be required. *Licenses and Certificates: A valid First Aid and CPR certificate and recertification shall be required. Completion and annual renewal of health trainings, Seizures, Diabetics, Medication, Asthma, Professional Crisis Management (PCM), Project Para program or equivalent Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)
