THE ROLE
The Heavy Equipment Operator II position is a full-time, hourly position and located in Lost Hills. Heavy equipment may include excavators, front-end loaders, dozers, scrapers and other pieces of equipment. This role requires more advanced skills and knowledge compared to an entry-level operator, including the ability to operate a wider variety of equipment and perform more complex tasks. The Intermediate Operator will work closely with senior operators, foremen, and other team members to ensure safe, efficient, and accurate completion of projects.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Operate a range of heavy equipment, including excavators, dozers, scrapers, front-end loaders and other equipment to perform tasks such as grading, digging, lifting, and material handling.
- Perform advanced tasks such as land leveling, trenching, and precise excavation in accordance with blueprints and project specifications.
- Maintain equipment by performing regular pre-operational checks, troubleshooting, and minor repairs, reporting any major malfunctions to supervisors
- Coordinate with other workers and supervisors to ensure work is done safely and according to schedule
- Utilize various machine attachments, such as buckets, forks, and augers, to complete specialized tasks as needed
- Follow safety protocols and ensure that machinery and equipment are used in compliance with company and industry safety standards
- Assist in preparing construction sites, ensuring that machinery is set up properly and any hazards are identified and addressed
- Train and mentor junior or less experienced operators, sharing knowledge and promoting safe and efficient operating practices
- Document daily operations, including equipment use, hours worked, material movements, and any incidents or challenges encountered during work
- Contribute to the efficient operation of the job site by assisting with material handling, site clean-up, and other general labor tasks when necessary
- Perform other related duties
Requirements
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
At least 2-5 years of experience operating heavy equipment in a large scale, industrial environment
- Ability to operate a variety of heavy machinery and equipment safely and efficiently
- Proven ability to read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and technical specifications
- Strong knowledge of safety protocols and the ability to enforce safety procedures on-site
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work well with a team
- Ability to troubleshoot and perform minor maintenance and repairs on machinery
- Certification in heavy equipment operation or related fields is a plus (e.g., OSHA, NCCCO, or manufacturer-specific certifications).
TRAINING TRAVEL
- Ability to travel out of state for temporary training.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Environmental conditions - must work outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat. The operator may at times be exposed to dangerous and/or toxic substances and must take necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose and skin from irritation and infection
- Mental demands- conditions that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue. This position entails working independently and maintaining a schedule of work. Any problems or inconveniences may result in increased stress to complete tasks in a limited time
- Occasionally lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling 25 to 50 pounds
- Climb on and around equipment and sit for long periods while operating equipment
- Walk and stand for long periods of time
- Able to climb a minimum of 2 story of stairs
