Position Overview
The Holton-Arms School seeks a collaborative, flexible, and enthusiastic Instrumental Music - Strings Teacher to join our robust Fine and Performing Arts team. The Instrumental Music - Strings program provides students with the opportunity to develop their artistic voice, by deepening their skills and competencies around instrumental technique, music theory, ensemble performance, and appreciation of diverse musical styles. Students explore the work of the string orchestra as part of a supportive and engaging community, learn to be strong collaborators in shared creative work and gain verbal and nonverbal communication skills that promote creativity and confidence in performance, and in life. The Instrumental Music - Strings program offers classes and ensembles during our school day, and through a robust extracurricular/co-curricular program offered after school. The Instrumental Music - Strings program seeks to create a space where students feel prepared to take risks, grow, and deepen their understanding of themselves, others, and their world, and we invite candidates who are excited to be a part of this work.
Key Responsibilities
The average salary range for this position is $70,000 to $100,000, the exact salary to be determined based on education and experience. We use a step scale to determine teacher salary. Early career teachers are initially compensated less than the listed salary range and highly experienced teachers are compensated more than the listed salary range. Additional stipends are available for coaching, certain club sponsorship, and significant commitments outside of the classroom. Benefits include health insurance with a generous employer contribution to medical, dental, and vision; life and disability insurance; 403b retirement savings with an employer match and non-elective contribution; employee assistance program, tuition remission for eligible children; professional development opportunities; paid parental leave after one year of employment; paid sick and personal days; and lunch is provided on school days.

Key Responsibilities
- Teach instrumental music classes, focusing on strings (violin, viola, cello, bass) to students in grades 3-12.
- Direct and conduct string ensembles, including orchestra and chamber groups, ensuring high-quality performances.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive strings curriculum that aligns with national standards and the school’s mission.
- Engage in an iterative process of revising and enhancing the Instrumental Music - Strings curriculum to best meet the needs of students.
- Support the mission and values of the school.
- Collaborate with members of the Fine and Performing Arts Departments, and beyond, to assist with other creative projects as needed. This could include planning and implementing interdisciplinary projects, helping students prepare college application videos, portfolios, audition material, etc.
- Communicate regularly and effectively with students and parents.
- Work collaboratively with other teachers in the department, division colleagues, and administrators.
- Provide extra support outside of class time, as needed, during the school day.
- Serve as an advisor, facilitating meetings to promote student well-being.
- Attend regular meetings, including in-house professional development.
- Commitment to academic excellence and supporting our Global Education and Diversity institutional priorities.
- Participate in supervisory and extracurricular duties, including chaperoning events and parent events.
- Contribute to school life beyond the classroom by serving as a faculty advisor, club sponsor, and/or other duties as assigned
- Oversee the Middle School String Orchestra, Upper School String Orchestra, and Upper School Chamber Orchestra.
- Manage the String Rental Program: maintain inventory, distribution, repair, and budgeting allocation of string instruments (violin, viola, cello, and string bass). Maintain records, serial numbers, repair histories, and distribute on an ongoing basis to accommodate student growth and progress.
- 3 to 5 years of relevant teaching experience.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Music Education or Instrumental Music education. Masters in Music Education or Instrumental Music education, or professional performance experience preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of string pedagogy and best practices for instrumental music education.
- Experience working with students in grades 3 through 12.
- Experience with embedding Social and Emotional Learning and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging competencies into their curriculum.
- Passionate about working in a single-gender educational environment.
- Committed to creating a student-centered, project-based, and competency-driven classroom.
- Proficient with technology and digital platforms in the classroom and as they relate to enhancing the arts educational experience for students.
- Demonstrated willingness to collaborate with colleagues within and across grades and disciplines.
- Committed to continued professional learning.
- Creative and innovative teaching artists with a sense of humor and strong communication skills.
- Coaching experience is preferred. Priority Varsity coaching opportunities include Soccer and Lacrosse.
