Job Title: Classroom Teacher – Music, including Band and Chorus

Brief Description of Position:

Teaches one or more classes in the field of music education to pupils in assigned grades which could include Grades 4-12, and WILL include marching band and chorus in grades 9-12, and assists in other school programs as assigned. Successful applicant will lead the "Viking Band of Pride".

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Teaches skills in music, appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in instrumental music (band, instrumental ensemble) and/or choral music adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
2. Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified in state law elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
3. Plan a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
4. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Encourages pupils to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible.
5. Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
6. Maintains surveillance over school-owned music, robes, uniforms, musical instruments and equipment in order to prevent loss or abuse. Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
7. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly productive environment during individual practice, group rehearsal, and musical performances.
8. Evaluates each pupil’s musical growth and performance assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group. Prepares progress reports.
9. Plans, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for school and community, including but not limited to athletic events (half-time program, etc.). Applies knowledge of district procedures and limitations set on performances.
10. Maintains professional competence through participation in inservice education workshops and clinics provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth, activities related to music.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Selects appropriate music, books and instructional aide to enhance learning. Requisitions books, music, robes, uniforms, musical instruments, instructional aids, and instructional supplies, and maintains required inventory records.
2. Communicates with parents and school counselors on the individual pupil’s progress.
3. Identifies pupil needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
4. Cooperates with school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions.
5. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level. May teach under modular or flexible scheduling plans.
6. Performs basic attendance reporting and business services as required.
7. Shares in the sponsorship of student activities and participates in faculty committees.
8. May plan and coordinate the work of aides, teacher assistants, or other paraprofessional.

Supervision Exercised or Received:
Under the immediate direction of the site administrator.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Credential: Appropriate credential/ District will consider out of state applicants who hold a credential authorizing service in this area.

2. Education: Bachelor’s degree - preferably music major or minor, including all courses needed to meet Credential requirements . Instrumental teachers: Ability to play at least one standard instrument.

3. Experience: Preferred but not required

4. Personal Qualities: Appearance, grooming, and personality which establish a desirable example for pupils. Ability to meet district standards for physical and mental health. Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teacher. Native musical ability, skill and good judgment.

Salary : $65,664 - $123,419
