A Brief Overview
Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, assists in nursing care and preparation of surgical patients by performing routine and delegated duties. Performs scrub duties and related procedures as a part of the sterile team, i.e. donning gown and gloves, creating and maintaining a sterile field, and passing instrumentation to surgeons as necessary during procedures

What You Will Do
- Assists surgeon as scrub person according to prescribed standards
- Maintains aseptic technique at all times as directed by accepted standards
- Sets up table, instruments and supplies according to type of operation
- Assists in preparation and draping of patient and operative area according to need
- Assists and anticipates needs of surgeon regarding instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies according to technique procedure and special requirements needed in operation procedure, and maintains a correct count
- Assists in maintenance and care of specimens as directed by accepted standards
- Assists with table equipment, positioning of patient, application of dressing, and casts
- Decontaminates all equipment, instruments and supplies as directed
- Assists in circulating duties
- Under direct Registered Nurse supervision, assists in setting up operating room with instruments and supplies for surgical procedures
- Transports patients for surgery
- Performs surgical skin preparation of the surgical site (shaving and cleansing on patient's skin prior to surgery) either on the patient's unit, holding area or in the O.R. Suite
- Assists in workroom activities
- Assists in autoclave testing and maintenance of records
- Assembles and sterilizes supplies as needed for both steam and gas sterilization
- Assists with housekeeping duties to maintain cleanliness in the O.R. Suite in order to ensure a safe patient environment
- Cleans, assembles and sterilizes surgical instrument sets, metal ware, rubber goods and synthetic products
- Operates ultrasonic unit as needed
- Care of all used and unused supplies
- Assists and maintains awareness of safety hazards
- Recognizes and reports defective equipment to be repaired
- Maintains traffic control through use of proper areas and corridors at all times.
- Aware of controls to prevent contamination, maintains cleanliness of operating room tables, suction bottles, shelves, cabinets, overhead lights before and after surgery
- Prevents infection, by maintaining constant awareness and application of principles of aseptic technique, including special routine for specific cases
- Evaluates self objectively
- Demonstrates a variety of communication skills needed for this position
- High School Diploma Required and
- Trade/Vocational School graduate of a nationally or regionally accredited educational program for surgical technologists Required and
- Must annually complete 15 hours of continuing education to remain eligible to practice as a surgical technologist. Required
- 1-3 years Nine months to one year in similar work capacity. Required
- Completion of a formal clinical internship through an accredited surgical technology program Required
- Good physical and mental health are essential.
- Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with co-workers
- Maintains good habits of personal hygiene.
- CST - Certified Surgical Technologist Holds and maintains a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Upon Hire Required
