A Brief Overview
Provides clinical support for pre-analytical specimen processing and post-analytical report distribution for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
What you will do
- Technical: • Familiar with specimen requirements and patient population for all tests. Researches requirements for reference tests. • Processes all types of specimens, including blood, urine, body fluids and cultures. • Processes specimens that require special processing like bone marrow, stones, amniotic fluid and products of conception. Processes special outpatient test requests (Transplant kits, Clinical Research, etc.) • Diligent in processing priority specimens within the Laboratory’s STAT goals. • Serves as a resource for nursing units for specimen requirements. • Accurately labels specimens. • Distributes routine and STAT specimens in a timely manner to appropriate lab sections for analysis. • If competent, performs outpatient phlebotomy as necessary.
- LIS/HIS: • Verifies patient registration information Assures correct current registration is used for test orders. Performs reduced registration as necessary. • Assures that correct physician is associated with each patient’s order. • Assures that all tests are entered as ordered by the physician. • Documents receipt of specimens in the laboratory from all sources like pneumatic tube and outreach. • Prints and distributes laboratory reports. • Assists Senior Clinical Support Specialists with downtime procedures.
- Customer Service: • Answers the phone in a timely and professional manner. • Attempts to answer questions, but refers questions and problems to the appropriate laboratory personnel when necessary. • Documents caller information clearly and accurately. • Accepts physician orders with read back to verify. Asks for a faxed prescription. • Reports patient results by reading or faxing the report. • Records courier calls for pickup. • Dispatches couriers. • Schedules Glucose Tolerance Tests. • Monitors and improves customer service of Laboratory Front Office. Monitors appearance of Lab Outpatient Waiting Room.
- Operational: • Notifies Senior Clinical Support Specialists when supplies need to be replenished. • Assists Laboratory Administrative Assistant as needed. • Demonstrates infection control and other safety techniques. Practices Standard Precautions. • Follows Hospital and Lab Policies and procedures. • Respects patient confidentiality. Practices HIPAA compliance. • Perform related duties as required
Education Qualifications
- High School Diploma Or equivalent Required
Experience Qualifications
- Phlebotomy experience Preferred
