A Brief Overview
Performs venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients without immediate supervision.
What you will do
- Consistently identifies all patients and specimens per hospital and laboratory policies
- Assures phlebotomy is being performed on the correct patient by using two patient identifiers
- Maintains low blood culture contamination rate by using correct blood culture procedures
- Obtains blood specimens in a skillful and professional manner
- Recognizes problems unique to different age groups and adjusts treatment procedures accordingly
- Performs phlebotomy on patients in all blood drawing locations. (Inpatient and On-site Patient Service Centers)
- Maintains phlebotomy supply inventory. Assures that no outdated tubes are used for patient care
- Identifies self as a HNMC employee, wears HNMC ID Badge and proper uniform when drawing from patients both in-hospital and outside of hospital
- Has an understanding of computer workstation and printers in order to perform daily functions
- Familiar with specimen requirements and patient preparation for all tests. Researches requirements for reference tests
- Shows working knowledge of Collection Manager, troubleshooting, and resolving issues
- Shows a working knowledge of appropriate LIS and HIS computer programs in order to enter demographic patient data, enter test requests, print labels, interim and cumulative patient reports, phlebotomy collection rounds, mailbox, collection verification, downtime and other programs pertinent to processing and collecting specimens
- Performs other related duties as requested
Education Qualifications
- High School Diploma Or equivalent experience Required and
- Associate's Degree Preferred
Experience Qualifications
- 1-3 years Prefer at least one year previous hospital experience as a phlebotomist Preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of venipuncture and capillary blood collection.
- Effective verbal communication and comprehension
Licenses and Certifications
- ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist ASCP certification as a phlebotomist or certification from a recognized professional organization for phlebotomy Upon Hire Preferred
