JOB DESCRIPTION – Assistant Teacher
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Assistant Teacher is responsible for assisting lead teachers in the care and education of the children enrolled in the school, as well as assisting in matters of classroom management. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: physical care giving, following age appropriate and developmentally appropriate activities as instructed by the teacher and facilitating supportive relationships with children, staff and parents.
SPIRITUAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Each employee at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church Preschool must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and believe that the Bible is God’s word and standard for faith and daily living. The employee shall be a Christian role model in attitude, speech and actions towards others. He/she shall be a member in good standing at a local church that has a statement of faith in agreement with the Holy Spirit Lutheran Church statement of faith. He/she shall be in wholehearted agreement with the center’s Statement of Faith and Christian philosophy of education.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 45 Hour Childcare Training Class which includes 5-hour literacy training (signed up for within 30 days of employment and completed within 90 days).
- Successful completion of the hiring packet and all state regulations required for this position.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Comfortable with team-based work structure; ability to demonstrate flexibility on the job, which means at times to cover when needed in other classrooms.
- Demonstrates initiative, is conscientious and provides complete follow-through on areas of responsibility.
- Willingness to continue education in the early childhood field.
Accountability:
- The Assistant Teacher is accountable to the Director of the early education program in all areas of school policy.
- The Assistant Teacher is accountable to the Lead Teacher and the Director in all areas of classroom management.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:
Responsibilities of this position will include but is not necessarily limited to the following:
- Assist lead teacher in ensuring the safety of each child enrolled in the class whether in the classroom, outside or in common areas.
- Assist the lead teacher in accomplishing the goals of the classroom.
- Assist in the areas of classroom order and cleanliness.
- Support co-workers with encouragement and participation in school-wide activities.
- Prepare and/or distribute snacks; assist in lunch distribution
- Keep kitchen area clean.
- Help with facility maintenance as needed. (Clean counters, sinks, toys, etc.)
- Serve as a Christian role model for children in the area of attitude, speech and actions on a daily basis.
- Treat all children with dignity and respect his/her cultural background.
- Respect the cultural differences and socioeconomic diversity of all parents.
- Respect parents as their child’s first teacher.
- Direct parents to Lead teacher or Administration with questions regarding parenting, children’s progress or a child’s development and assimilation into the classroom.
- Attend all required staff meetings and or training sessions required.
- Attend and assist at Preschool Christmas Program and VPK Graduation.
- Maintain the Matthew 18 principle when conflict arises among staff.
Physical requirements:
- Consistently able to observe and respond to children’s needs, emergencies and/or conflicts that might occur in the classroom, on the playground and/or in common areas.
- Consistently able to assist in the supervision of multiple children.
- Consistently able to supervise children outside while exposed to the sun, rain, snow and/or other weather and temperature changes.
- Consistently able to lift children of up to 50 lbs. from the floor to waist height.
- Consistently able to kneel or crouch down to maintain eye contact at child’s level.
- Consistently able to sit on the floor to work with children and reach high enough to make contact with children on all playground equipment.
- Consistently able to react to a child that is 20 – 30 feet away within 30 seconds.
- Consistently able to respond to children’s first aid needs which may include cuts and bruises.
- Consistently able to establish clear communications orally and in writing (in the English language).
- Consistently able to deal effectively with the stress involved in working closely with children, parents and co-workers.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $17.00 - $18.00 per hour
