Kindergarten Assistant Teacher
Position Summary:
The Daisy Lane School is the Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten division of Holy Trinity School, located in Glenn Dale, Maryland. Qualified candidates for this position will be enthusiastic about facilitating developmentally appropriate education in our preschool program and be comfortable using preschool based curriculum to drive classroom lessons. They must possess a creative can-do spirit, along with the ability to work collaboratively with students, peers, and parents. Lastly, they must also possess a positive attitude and be able to pivot in a classroom setting that changes daily.
The Kindergarten Assistant Teacher reports directly to the Head of The Daisy Lane School. However, the Lead Teacher will provide and set daily expectations and assignments about what needs to be accomplished. The Kindergarten Assistant Teacher will also be expected to perform other duties, related to those outlined below and as assigned.
Instructional Duties:
· Provide learning experiences and teaches the course of study prescribed by The Daisy Lane School and Holy Trinity, as a whole.
· Assist in creating individual, small group, and whole group instruction opportunities designed to meet both individual and class needs that help the students make satisfactory transitions to the next levels in school, using the prescribed curriculum for that specific grade band and per the guidance of the Lead Teacher.
· Prepare and use instructional materials suitable to encourage growth in critical foci areas for preschool students: academic, social, emotional, and physical.
· Establish and maintain standards of classroom management required to achieve effective participation in all activities without interfering with the natural informal atmosphere of a preschool classroom.
· Maintain a consistent structured daily routine with minimal wasted time.
· Work directly with the Lead Teacher to prepare lesson plans that meet the standards, goals, and objectives set forth in the kindergarten curriculum.
· Maintain and foster a positive and supportive relationship with the Lead Teacher.
· Provide the Lead Teacher with support when it comes to evaluating the progress of students and keeping appropriate and detailed records that will be periodically reviewed by the Head of The Daisy Lane School.
· Maintain professional competences through in-house professional development opportunities and/or professional growth activities sponsored by recognized educational organizations and college courses.
Professional Duties:
· Work collaboratively with the Lead Teacher to build a safe, healthy, and supportive classroom environment.
· Respect confidentiality.
· Actively participate in the school scheduled parent-teacher conferences, along with the Lead Teacher.
· Show warmth, care, and fairness to all students and build strong relationships with each of them.
· Use positive language and appropriate forms of discipline that do not shame or humiliate students.
· Assist in creating a climate of respect in the classroom and beyond, especially when interacting with students, peers, parents, and members of the administrative team.
· Willingness and ability to assume the lead role in the absence of the Lead Teacher.
· Accept suggestions and constructive criticism from both peers and administrators gracefully.
· Demonstrate a clear understanding of the importance of punctuality and attendance, including school-related events.
Qualifications:
· BA or BS from an accredited college or university is encouraged.
· 90-Hour Child Care Certification is suggested, especially if there is no 4-year degree from an accredited college or university.
· At least three years’ experience working in a preschool or kindergarten setting is a plus.
· Excellent oral and written interpersonal and communication skills.
· Knowledge and experience working with the Responsive Classroom model is a plus.
· Competency with computer skills, including, but not limited to, the Microsoft Office Suite.
· Successfully complete and pass both state and federal background checks.
· CPR Certified.
