The Comptroller at Holyoke Community College serves as the chief accounting officer and financial steward, responsible for overseeing the institution's financial health, compliance, and fiscal management. This role involves ensuring accurate financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance with federal, state, and institutional policies. The Comptroller plays a key role in financial planning and strategic budgeting, providing transparent and efficient management of resources to support the college’s mission and educational objectives.  

 

This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by ensuring financial integrity and supporting the fiscal sustainability of Holyoke Community College. The ideal candidate will be a proactive leader with a commitment to the college’s educational mission.

  1. Financial Oversight & Reporting:
    • Prepare and oversee the college's annual financial statements, ensuring they meet GAAP and GASB standards.
    • Develop and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for college leadership and the Board of Trustees.
    • Coordinate with external auditors and manage the audit process to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  2. Budget Development & Management:
    • Lead the college’s budget planning and management process, working with department heads to develop accurate budget forecasts.
    • Monitor budget performance, analyze variances, and implement corrective actions as needed.
    • Provide insights and financial projections to support strategic decision-making and resource allocation.
  3. Internal Controls & Compliance:
    • Design, implement, and monitor internal controls to protect college assets and ensure financial integrity.
    • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies related to higher education finance, including federal and state funding guidelines.
    • Oversee grant management and reporting to ensure adherence to funder requirements and timelines.
  4. Cash Management & Financial Planning:
    • Manage cash flow and investments to maintain the college’s liquidity and meet operational needs.
    • Forecast and manage debt obligations, bond payments, and capital project funding.
    • Develop strategies for revenue generation and expense control to enhance financial sustainability.
  5. Leadership & Collaboration:
    • Provide guidance and support to accounting and finance and payroll staff, fostering a culture of professional growth and accountability.
    • Collaborate with academic and administrative departments to provide financial insights, support, and training.
    • Communicate effectively with stakeholders, including the Board of Trustees, donors, and government agencies, about financial matters.
    • Develops and implements short-term and long-term department goals consistent with the College’s Strategic Plan and senior management direction;
  6. Policy Development & Strategic Initiatives:
    • Contribute to policy development on financial matters, advising on issues such as tuition, fees, and financial aid strategies.
    • Lead initiatives to optimize the college’s financial systems, improve process efficiencies, and implement new technologies for financial management.
  7. Supervisory Responsibilities:   The Comptroller will supervise:
    • Business Office which comprises General Accounting, Purchasing, Accounts Payable, Budgeting, and Sponsored Programs Post Award Administration.
    • The Bursar’s Office
    • Payroll

REQUIRED:
  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance with at least 7-10 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance; OR Bachelor’s Degree with over 10 years of experience in accounting or finance may apply;
  • Demonstrable knowledge of State and Federal rules and regulations applicable to institutions of higher education;
  • In-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and governmental accounting standards board (GASB) pronouncements;
  • Demonstrated high-level proficiency in integrated financial management systems and complementary database management reporting applications like (Questica/Banner/Ellucian/Chrome River/Softdocs/MMARS and Microsoft Office Suite of applications;
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems, as well as Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  
  • CPA;
  • Commonwealth of Massachusetts rules and regulations.
Full-time, Non-Unit Professional position

Salary Range:  $125,981.24 - $136,365.00/year;  plus a comprehensive State benefits package

Hours:  37.5 hrs./week

Funding Source:  State

- All candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States. HCC is not sponsoring H1B Visa.
