What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Science Faculty Member position at Holyoke Community College?
Seeking a candidate to instruct in onsite lecture and laboratory sections of majors' and non-majors' environmental science courses, participate in curriculum review and development, college governance, professional development, and recruitment and retention efforts, advise students and perform other college service as appropriate. 1. Teach majors' and non-majors' courses in the Environmental Science curriculum primarily on campus.
2. Works closely with the Environmental Science Department faculty and staff to:
- Develop and maintain own course learning management system sites.
- Develop innovative and inclusive methods for teaching laboratory/field sciences.
- Review, research, and experiment with pedagogy as well as evaluate alternative teaching strategies in science.
- Develop and help set up laboratory practical examinations as needed.
- Update syllabi and assist in developing department-approved lecture and laboratory curricula.
- Develop and assess student learning outcomes.
- Incorporate technology into the classroom.
- Pursue grant possibilities.
- Work with community partners to introduce opportunities for our students
- Incorporate community equity in the classroom environment
Master's degree in Environmental Science or closely related field;
Demonstrated excellent teaching skills including:
• Interactive teaching and varied pedagogical strategies.
• Experience using technology in the classroom.
• Experience in laboratory and field.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Areas of knowledge must include: environmental geology, environmental site assessment, soil science, general environmental science, oceanography.
• A working knowledge of GIS software.
• A high level of comfort with moderate hiking, kayaking and operation of an extended passenger van.
• An understanding of universal design in a classroom setting
Commitment to and understanding of the mission of the community college;
Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and student body of diverse abilities, age, ethnicity, race and sexual orientation.
PREFERRED:
- Professional experience in environmental science related fields, community college teaching experience, related non- teaching experience in the field of environmental science; Laboratory equipment proficiency: microscopy, spectrophotometry, titration techniques, pH meters, dissolved oxygen meters, specific conductivity meters, turbidimeters;
- Taxonomy experience: flora and fauna identification including those common to New England: trees, wildflowers, aquatic plants, phytoplankton and zooplankton identification;
- Proficiency in the fields of geology, soil science, and environmental site assessment;
- Technical aptitude: spreadsheet and word processing programs, GIS software, learning management system education software;
- Teaching experience in higher education.

Salary: Minimum $57,013 - $65,361. Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Full State benefits.
