Holyoke Public Schools offers an excellent Acceleration Academy that reinforces skills learned during the year, strengthens identified areas of concern and provides a supportive environment for student academic and socio-emotional growth.

DESCRIPTION: The Paraprofessional works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce the learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher. They report to the Manager of Extended Learning. Paraprofessionals will coordinate with the classroom teacher to implement effective classroom management techniques and reinforce academic standards. This will ensure student success during Acceleration Academy. Acceleration Academy is designed to accelerate student learning through engaging, standards-aligned lessons.

Student Support

• Provide student support throughout all parts of the learning day including recreation, academic, and enrichment activities as well as transitions
• Build strong, positive relationships with students through affirmative and respectful 1:1 conversations, mentoring, and skill building activities
• Promote positive behavior, youth development, student voice, and leadership within the program
• Provide 1:1 and small group academic support to students under the direction of a certified teacher
• Address behavior issues/concerns in accordance with established behavior policies
  
  

Program Support

• Be an active participant in staff development and engage in reflection on adult practices to promote positive youth development and social emotional learning
• Support staff in providing students with a programming environment that is conducive to learning
• Assist teachers and enrichment instructors with various logistical aspects of implementing enrichment programs and academic support
  
  

Family and Community Engagement

• Make phone calls home to families and parents to offer positive feedback about youth participation in the program
• Participate in family engagement events and activities
  
  

Qualifications/Requirements

• High School Diploma or working towards one with demonstrated student leadership experience
• Some experience with students in an urban setting preferred
• Demonstrated interest in urban education, social justice, youth development, and enrichment. College students with relevant experience are encouraged to apply!
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent teamwork skills, and ability to be flexible and think creatively
• Bilingual applicants (Spanish) are strongly encouraged to apply
  
  

Program Information

• February Vacation Academy will run from February 17, 2025, through February 21, 2025.
• April Vacation Academy will run from April 21, 2025, through April 25, 2025.
• Elementary Sites will run from 8:30-2:30 for students.
• Middle School will run from 8:00-1:00 for students.
• High School sites will run from 8:00-12:00 for students.
  
  

Pre-Program Work

• Attend MANDATORY professional development on TBD.
• Attend MANDATORY planning meetings TBD
• Engage in curriculum development and planning, as needed.
  
  

Stipend

Elementary Paraprofessional: $1,300.00/ Week

High School Paraprofessional: $750.00/ Week
