Job Overview:
We are seeking a Legal Assistant to join our fast-paced and growing firm in Southfield, Michigan. This position will support the Collections department by performing various clerical tasks, including document preparation and filing, case management, and communicating with Courts and other related entities. The Legal Assistant must be able to interpret and prepare various legal documents, including pleadings, writs, correspondence, and agreements. They should also exhibit strong organizational skills, be focused on priorities, and remain flexible about changing directives.
The individual in this position must have relevant legal experience (preferably in a Legal Collections environment), the ability to interpret and prepare legal documents, organizational skills, and the ability to focus on priorities while remaining flexible to changing directives. A successful candidate will be an initiative-taker, a multitasker who works well under pressure and follows through on tasks, and someone willing to learn. Responsibilities may include:
- Assists with delegating the daily work of the team as directed by the Supervisor
- Prepare, review, and mail pleadings, writs, correspondence, and agreements
- Provides and participates in training and coaching new hires and current staff
- Fully knowledgeable of department procedures and workflow and can effectively communicate changes to the team as directed by the Leadership Team
- Stays current with and communicates judges/courts protocol and changes to Supervisor
- Review electronic Court Register of Actions to follow up on pending documents
- Request checks for Court filing fees or invoice payment
- Receive inbound calls and place outbound calls to and from courts, clients, or other related entities regarding case status or informational needs per department protocol
- Maintain accurate and current information in case management and client systems
- As a Sr. Legal Assistant, you will maintain accurate and current information in our case management and client systems.
- Provide updates to the clients via client-directed systems and email
- Complete the daily print folder, which contains important documents and information necessary for the day's tasks
- Assist the Leadership Team and attorneys when needed by providing clerical support
- Provide coverage for missing team members to ensure the workflow is not interrupted
- Communicate both verbally and in writing with all members of the firm, clients, and third parties in a professional manner
- Other duties and projects as assigned
Job Requirements:
- 7 years of Legal Collections experience in a demanding environment
- 5 years as a Legal Assistant in a Legal Collections environment
- A Paralegal Certificate is a plus but not required
- Ability to work accurately, meticulously, and productively
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs
- Ability to learn and work in multiple court web-based systems, specifically TrueFiling/Mifile
- CLS – Collection Master software is a plus
- Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to work independently and contribute to every aspect of a team environment
