Summary:
Oversee preparation, service, and clean-up of meal preparation for lunch Carl Gipson Center in Everett. Supervise and assign duties to meal site volunteers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepare and serve foods according to instructions and in compliance with HACCP guidelines.
- Portion cold foods, cover, refrigerate until serving time
- Prepare hot foods according to preparation instructions – maintain appropriate temperatures
- Review upcoming menu – Pre-prep items such as gelatin and baked desserts when needed
- Set up serving line no earlier than 15 minutes prior to service, milk should be set out no earlier than 5 minutes
- Use proper serving utensils for portion control
- Assure that food is properly and attractively placed on trays
Store foods according to standards to assure food safety and sanitation.
- Check to be sure refrigerated equipment is operating at safe temperatures and report any problems to Nutrition office
- Rotate stock appropriately
- Label and date leftovers - discard any perishable foods not frozen for future use – any foods distributed to participants to take home must include cooking instructions and discard date
Maintain clean food preparation, service, and dining areas.
- Assure tables are cleaned before and after lunch with sanitizing solution
- Follow cleaning schedule for equipment and area cleaning
- Wash flatware, dishes, cooking equipment as per standards, store in proper place
- Check and record food temperatures
Manage volunteers in meal program.
- Recruit or assist with the recruitment of volunteers
- Train on specific job responsibilities
- Assign daily duties
- Assure volunteers have valid Food Handlers Permits
- Attend scheduled cook’s meetings-minimum of 6 a year
Complete required documentation and submit to the Nutrition office on a timely basis.
- Daily sign-up sheets, pink weekly report every week via the drivers
- Monthly inventory, blue food temperature and yellow equipment temperature sheets
- Gold commissary order sheets with driver by Tuesday for next week delivery
- Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience Required:
- High school degree or equivalent
- Minimum of 4 years in a food service position required

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Able to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and participants.
- Ability to supervise volunteers.
- Able to work in fast-paced environment with distractions and interruptions.
- Strong customer service skills required.
- Interest in working with and for senior adults.
- Sense of humor.
- Valid food handler’s card.
Ergonomic Requirements:
Standard kitchen conditions. Standing for long periods of time, lifting up to 40 lbs, bending, stooping, kneeling, handling hot pans, using sharp utensils such as knives and can openers, frequent handling of frozen foods.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- One year experience in food service
- Valid food handlers card
- Ability to work independently along with regularly reporting to supervisor
- Ability to provide oversight and guidance to volunteers
Absent any regulatory or contractual requirement for specific education/certification, other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with diverse communities
- Interest in working with and for senior adults
- Fluency in languages other than English
Work environment and physical demands:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
- Employee frequently is required to stand up to 8 hours per day, reach with hands and arms, bend, stoop, kneel and talk or hear.
- Employee frequently is required to handle hot pans, sharp utensils, and frozen foods while working in a hot and humid environment.
- Employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Employee must regularly lift and/or move food or equipment up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to use full range of sense of hearing, sight, touch and smell as needed to work effectively in a kitchen and prepare meals.
