Transitional Shelter Coordinator

The Homeless Prevention Center (HPC) seeks a motivated individual to support our expanded transitional shelter program which provides short-term shelter while families work with case managers to secure permanent housing. The Transitional Shelter Coordinator is not a case manager, but supports families through the teaching of life skills, assisting with referrals and logistics, supporting move-ins/move-outs, and ensuring transitional apartment units are kept in good condition with the needed supplies on hand. The Coordinator will be hired by the HPC Executive Director, supervised by the HPC Administrative Assistant, and support HPC Case Managers and the Participants staying in the shelter apartments.

Principal Duties:

  • Support participants moving in to and out of shelter apartments;
  • Support, as needed, case managers with clients staying in the shelter apartments;
  • Support, as needed, the Administrative Assistant with inventory and re-stocking of essential items in the shelter apartments;
  • Assist, as needed, with troubleshooting, such as helping a participant if they lock themselves out of the apartment;
  • Coordinate with Case Managers to provide the best possible outcomes for a family;
  • Teaching basic life skills to families in the emergency apartment units, such as:
  • Developing menus, shopping, preparing and storing meals on a budget;
  • How to organize, tidy and clean the apartment unit;
  • Where and how to access laundry;
  • How to fill out a check and track bills and expenses;
  • How to access free or affordable public transportation;
  • How to access parks, libraries and outdoor recreation opportunities;
  • Encouraging positive family activities such as reading, sharing meals, playing games and going on outings together;
  • Helping families engage with other community events and resources they may be interested in.

Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain notes, as needed, for Case Managers and Management.
  • Maintain time and mileage records.
  • Access other training on an as-needed basis.
  • Assist co-workers and Management.

Qualifications:

Seeking candidates with experience working with low-income families and/or people experiencing homelessness.

Preference for candidates with experience in housing and/or homeless services; or an educational background including social work, human services or similar field.

Detail-oriented and able to keep notes on progress towards clients’ goals.

Knowledge of appropriate resources for families with children in the community.

This position expects a person to be non-judgmental, compassionate and possess an ability to communicate and work effectively with people from all walks of life.

Terms of Employment: The Housing Support Specialist is a full-time position with benefits offered by HPC, including paid vacation and paid personal time, paid sick time, paid holidays and a voluntary SIMPLE IRA plan. The position requires driving of a personal vehicle which is eligible for mileage reimbursement at the prevailing rate. This individual will be subject to an initial probationary period.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.00 - $24.00 per hour

  • Social Work, Human Service or Housing/Homelessness: 1 year (Preferred)

License/Certification:

  • Driver's License and an Insured, Inspected Vehicle (Preferred)

  • Rutland, VT 05701: Relocate before starting work (Required)
