Position: Direct Caregiver
A Direct Caregiver is an individual who provides assistance to others in the areas of eating, dressing, bathing, grooming, hair combing and shampooing, foot care (except cutting toenails), denture care, shaving, bedpan usage, transferring, and ambulation. It also includes housekeeping (vacuuming, changing beds, dusting, mopping, washing dishes, kitchen and bathroom cleaning), meal preparation, menu planning, and laundry.
QUALIFICATIONS: Direct care staff shall not be less than 18 years of age and shall be able to complete required reports and follow written and oral instructions that are related to the care and supervision of residents. They must be suitable to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social needs of each resident as well as be capable of appropriately handling emergency situations

The resident's care and well-being are always top priority. Be alert to any and all changes in the resident's condition and act accordingly. The care of the house is second to the care of the residents.
The Direct caregiver will not leave the premises, when residents are present, without relief from another Direct Caregiver or Administrator.
Responsibilities shall include but not be limited to:
- Know the whereabouts of each resident at all times.
- Know the assessment plan for each resident
- Assist residents with activities of daily living including personal hygiene, dress, mobility, hydration, meals, between meal snacks and toileting.
- Observe residents behavior.
- Immediately report any behavior, that is not normal for that resident, to the Administrator, resident’s family, Resident’s Representative or physician.
- Prepare an incident report.
- Be trained on administration of medication
- Administer resident scheduled and PRN medication accordingly
- Document medication administration accordingly
- Perform daily charting before leaving
- Give a report to the person relieving you. Include specific residents names, their activities, updates, unusual occurrences and any changes in the care or behavior of the specific resident.
- Lead residents in exercise program if appropriate
- Prepare meals
- Complete all shift specific duties (Days, Afternoons, Midnights).
- Maintain a neat and clean home for the residents;
- Change linens
- Launder residents clothes
- Clean dishes, eating areas and any other spilled food, etc.
- Assist with “Activities of Daily Living”, such as;
- bathing,
- mouth and oral hygiene;
- shaving;
- dressing;
- hair care including combing and shampooing;
- feeding;
- toileting;
- transferring;
- positioning and turning;
- assistance with ambulation;
- bladder and bowel care including constipation and diarrhea;
- skin and nail care, including prevention of skin breakdown;
- colostomy care (additional training provided);
- urinary catheter care (additional training provided);
- oxygen therapy (additional training provided);
- medication administration (additional training provided);
- nutrition and fluids;
- range-of-motion exercises (additional training provided);
- safe and appropriate techniques for personal care;
- body mechanics
- measurement of vital signs;
- observing, reporting and documenting client’s behavior/activity provided;
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
R 400.14204 Direct care staff; qualifications and training.
Direct care staff shall be competent before performing assigned
tasks, which shall include being competent in all of the following areas:
(a) Reporting requirements.
(b) First aid.
(c) Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
(d) Personal care, supervision, and protection.
(e) Resident rights.
(f) Safety and fire prevention.
(g) Prevention and containment of communicable diseases.
(h) Medication Management
(i) Behavior Intervention Techniques
