What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Teacher / Homeschool Teacher position at Homeschool?
Job Summary:
We are looking for a warm, caring, connection-focused homeschool educator to be with our bright, curious, and sensitive autistic 6yo daughter. We work within a neurodiversity-affirming lens (no ABA) and have found that a child-led/ Unschooling homeschool approach is best for her learning style currently. We value nature time, sensory motor activities, reading, art projects, handicrafts, and interpersonal connection to support a sense of well-being and regulation for her. There would also be opportunities to help her foster developing social skills with peers in a low stimulation environment (dyad or small group). There may be the possibility to attend OT Social groups once a week as her one-to-one aide.
Ideal candidate:
Experience working with neurodiverse elementary aged-children and/or homeschooling, connection-focused for co-regulation (we do not use ABA), experience with alternative philosophies of education (reggio emilia, charlotte mason, unschooling, waldorf), enjoy one-on-one work with a child out of the classroom setting, love nature, creative thinker, interested in cultivating a long-term connection with our family to support our kiddo's growth and development over time.
Job Responsibilities:
- Scaffolding child's learning about topics that interest her - Preparing crafts, projects, and activities based on these topics to incorporate in weekly rhythm
- Supporting development of age-appropriate literacy and numeracy skills
- Reading and storytelling
- Engaging in creative play and movement throughout the day that helps with child's sensory motor needs
- Provide social, emotional, and behavioral supports when out in the community interacting in classes, playdates, etc
- Preparing lunch/snacks
- Administering supplements/herbs/medicine
- Driving to classes, outings, playdates
- Masking indoors in our home w KN-95 mask (child has an immune system condition so we need to take precautions to minimize illness where possible)
- Light cleaning, organizing at the end of every shift (putting away project materials/items used throughout the day).
- Keeping a learning log of information that contains: notes, updates, projects, learning that took place for the day.
- Keep track of timesheets, and sending invoice at the end of each pay period.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field is required; teaching certification preferred.
- Experience working with neurodiverse children is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with homeschooling and alternative philosophies of education (reggio emilia, charlotte mason, unschooling, waldorf)homeschool and unschooling education is a plus.
- Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
Additional details:
- Location: Based at our home in Mill Valley, CA with trips to surrounding area
- Hours: ~ 30 hrs/wk plus prep time. Ideally including Saturdays if possible but not necessary. We have flexibility about number of hours and which days.
- Pay: $30-$45 per hour depending on level of experience and whether hired as independent contractor or W2 employee w benefits
Start date: By Feb 13th ideally, can be flexible for the right candidate.
