Homestead Gardens is seeking a Nursery Production Head Grower to oversee the production of high-quality plant materials for wholesale and retail sales. This role is responsible for managing inventory, directing production operations, and leading a team to ensure efficiency and excellence in our nursery production department.
Requirements
Operations & Production Management:
- Oversee the daily operations of the nursery production area, including potting and plant care.
- Develop and implement growing plans and schedules in collaboration with the Nursery Buyer.
- Monitor and maintain irrigation and hoop house infrastructure, ensuring timely repairs.
- Implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) procedures and treatments.
- Order necessary materials and supplies to support production.
- Coordinate the shipping and distribution of plant materials.
- Stay current with industry trends and make recommendations for process improvements.
Financial & Strategic Planning:
- Assist in developing and managing the annual department budget.
- Work with the Nursery Buyer to determine seasonal plant needs and customer demand.
- Attend industry shows and educational programs to stay informed of best practices.
Team Leadership & Development:
- Recruit, train, and develop production, potting, and shipping crew members.
- Ensure adherence to department policies and procedures.
- Foster a culture of teamwork and collaboration within the department.
Qualifications:
- Education: Degree in Horticulture or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of three years of supervisory experience, preferably in the green industry.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to train and develop staff.
- Knowledge of plant production, IPM techniques, and irrigation systems.
- Ability to work varied hours, including weekends and peak seasons.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, reach, bend, and stoop.
- Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
