About the Role
Hometown Organizing Project / Hometown Action (HOP/HA) seeks a part-time Lead Organizer to work 20-25 hours per week to drive our ongoing Climate Protection Project (CPP) in Dallas County. This is a mid-level organizing role ideal for candidates with 1-2 years of organizing experience. The Climate Protection organizer is responsible for building a base of small town and rural people impacted by or at risk of experiencing climate disasters (tornadoes, hurricanes, hail, flooding, etc) through direct community outreach and team-building to establish a long-term climate protection team. The anticipated start date will be February 2025.
The Community Organizer is responsible for carrying out the organization’s climate protection work using a power building framework. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, a self-starter, and enjoy meeting and connecting with diverse groups of people.This position is a part-time, hourly, hybrid remote/on-site position with opportunities for advancement to full-time with benefits within 6 to 12 months based on performance. Travel to the organization’s headquarters in Montevallo, AL is required approximately 1-2 times per month. Must be available for in-person, on-site work at the office or in community locations 3-4 days per week.
Candidates must be comfortable working independently in remote areas and have the ability to build genuine relationships across differences of race, class, gender, geography, and political ideology as well as with people who are experiencing significant hardship from climate disasters or other issues facing the community. While the role does require the ability to work with a high level of independence, the organizer must also be able to work well inside a team. This position will work closely with all members of staff as part of the Organizing Team and will report to the Organizing Director.

Responsibilities
The overall responsibilities include:
- Expand Hometown’s physical presence in Dallas County through one-to-one conversations with community members, and engaging in outreach activities at community events
- Establish, support, and grow a team of local community members and facilitate regular team meetings;
- Conduct regular, individual check-in meetings with local team leaders;
- Collaborate with local team to ratify and coordinate ongoing action that supports the team and organization’s goals and outcomes, including establishment of a local monthly community gathering;
- Collaborate with other members of Hometown’s Organizing Team to cultivate a culture of leadership and collaboration among all of Hometown’s local teams and team leaders;
- Help plan quarterly statewide membership meetings, including turning out members of the CPP team, coordinating leadership opportunities, and facilitating relationship-building between leaders across geographies and program areas;
- Accurately report on activities and track leadership development of members in organizational databases.
Qualifications
Candidates should have some experience building relationships with diverse groups of people and a strong interest in building community to advance social change. A strong commitment to racial, gender (including transgender), economic, and climate justice, as well as building power in rural and small town communities, is required.
- 1-2 years of community organizing experience, including conducting 1-to-1s, identifying self-interest, propositioning leaders into roles, and developing or managing teams;
- Experience and self-interest in building relationships with diverse groups of people to attain common goals;
- Ability to listen to others, to show empathy, and to incorporate other people’s stories and experiences into an inclusive strategy for action that involves those people;
- Ability to complete data entry tasks with high level of accuracy, and ability to learn how to navigate new databases and related technologies;
- Ability to work with a high degree of independence while adhering to organizational policies and procedures as well as working effectively in a team environment;
- Effective written and verbal communication, including ability to create email blasts and social media posts with direction, and make use of canvassing or phone banking scripts;
- Sound judgment and decision-making skills;
- Ability and flexibility to travel across the state, including overnight travel;
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $23-26/hr commensurate with experience, with opportunities for advancement;

Note: This job posting is for a Lead Organizer, a mid-level organizing position. Applicants who do not fully meet all of the criteria above may be considered for a Community Organizer position at a lower payscale. More experienced candidates may be considered for a Senior Organizer position at a higher payscale.
