This position is intended for High School Students or College Students that are looking for a job during the School Year.

Applicant must be at least 16 years old to qualify for this position.

Job Overview:
Homeward Bound Student DSP’s are responsible for safely and professionally providing exceptional programming and life enrichment services to people with severe developmental and physical disabilities in a residential group home setting and in the community.

Program Implementation

  • Seek to understand each individual, their goals, dreams and interests, and support them in living their best life!
  • Read, comprehend and implement individualized program plans, risk management plans, health care plans, and all other individual care plans as written.
  • Participate in and implement Person Centered Planning activities.
  • Participate in providing high quality personal care and program services to individuals served.
  • Ensure the delivery of active treatment by training, directing, and supporting individuals served in the completion of their daily living skills, including: hygiene, grooming, dressing, eating, communicating, and activities both within the home and in the community.
  • Ensure the protection and promotion of basic civil, human and legal rights of all individuals served.
  • Ensure the accurate, comprehensive and faithful recording of data on the individual’s general progress notes, program documentation, incident and other reports or records about service delivery, approaches, goal performance, activities inside the home and outside in the community, and any other events or findings required to be documented.

Promote Choice and Personal Interests

  • Actively support individuals in making their own choices, directing their own care as much as possible, and pursuing their interests. Offer or suggest new things on occasion.
  • Ensure individuals go on fun and interesting outings frequently. Suggest options for outings that may be of interest to individuals. Encourage and facilitate community inclusion for each individual. Community inclusion can take the form of friendships, clubs, employment, teams, groups, etc. (To be “included” suggests when someone is gone they will be missed by others.)
  • Support individuals with observing their personal religious beliefs and practices such as accompanying them to church and assisting them in celebrating religious holidays.

Daily Living

  • Ensure the understanding, expression, protection, and promotion of the preferences and choices of individuals in the daily provision of support, assistance and health care.
  • Actively engage in conversation and activities with individuals at all times.
  • Encourage individuals to participate to the fullest extent possible in completing activities of daily living including meal preparation, bathing, toileting, personal hygiene, dressing, eating, communicating, Passive Range of Motion, transporting, mobility and involvement in activities at home and in the community.
  • Complete personal hygiene activities as required, including but not limited to: changing briefs (freshening), bathing, toileting, toothbrushing, nail trimming, haircuts, etc.
  • Prepare and serve meals according to each individual’s health and dietary needs. Assist with ensuring the house is appropriately stocked with required food to prepare meals according to the house menu.
  • Complete and record accurate data on individual programs, goals and activities.
  • Complete appropriate documentation and follow through on employee incidents, individual incidents, HBI incidents and Vulnerable Adult/Child Protection issues as required by company policy and procedure, federal and state law and regulations.
  • Ensure completion and documentation of all household tasks including cleaning (as needed and as required), light maintenance such as keeping steps and sidewalks ice/snow free, outside maintenance, laundry, and clothing/personal belongings maintained and in good condition.
  • Ensure a safe and sanitary living environment for the individuals, including but not limited to household cleaning, laundry, shoveling snow and salting sidewalks/driveway.
  • Participate in building a pleasant, fun and happy home life and physical environment for the individuals. Decorate the home with styles and items that are of interest to the residents.
  • Celebrate birthdays, events, milestones, achievements, seasons, and holidays in the home.

Health Services

Medications and Treatments

  • Administer medication and treatments as ordered by a doctor.
  • Assist with inventory management and ordering supplies for individuals as needed.

Assess and monitor each individual’s health situation.

  • Complete body check assessments on assigned individuals once per shift.
  • Maintain high level of confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA.

Professionalism

  • Engage only in effective and respectful interpersonal communication with all HBI personnel, individuals, families and external customers while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor.
  • Receive and accept professional feedback and constructive criticism to improve service quality and job performance.
  • Answer the house phone promptly and professionally. Return any missed calls immediately.
  • Check HBI e-mail once per shift to stay updated on new and important information.
  • Ensure all written directions including memos, policies, procedures, written directives, standards, laws, regulations and contracts are read, understood, and implemented.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Training and Education

  • Attend and receive all scheduled and required training according to imposed deadlines.
  • Attend, participate in, and demonstrate learning from mandatory meeting and training sessions as required by the organization or the supervisor.
  • Respond appropriately and effectively to training, coaching, motivating, leading and discipline.
  • Perform job duties in accordance with HBI training, policies and procedures.

Teamwork

  • Respectfully cooperate with all HBI personnel, management, individuals, families, guardians and external customers to ensure excellent service delivery.
  • Accept direction and instructions from HBI supervisors and management.
  • Build and maintain high levels of integrity and trustworthiness with all HBI personnel, management, individuals, families, guardians and external customers.
  • Ensure adequate staff coverage for the service site on a daily basis, including emergency staffing, and document schedule changes.
  • Report to work on time, take appropriate breaks, and strive for Perfect Attendance.
  • Respond to necessary schedule fluctuations and organize workload to assure completion of tasks in a timely manner.
  • Comply with organizational and regulatory policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Demonstrate initiative and competence in identifying and solving problems to the benefit of the individual, the home, and the organization.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as needs arise to ensure excellent service delivery or as assigned by management.

Safety

  • Protect and promote of each individual’s safety.
  • Work safely, performing job tasks as trained and asking for proper instruction when in doubt. Abide by safety rules.
  • Follow all safety policies, procedures, and directives, and provide a safe and sanitary environment.
  • Immediately report all accidents, near misses, injuries or illnesses to the supervisor, and if possible, help in filling out an incident report form, First Report of Injury, and any other documentation as needed.
  • Identify, resolve and report hazardous conditions and unsafe behaviors to prevent injuries.
  • Immediately, safely and respectfully stop unsafe behavior that could lead to employee or resident injury.
  • Notify supervisor of hazardous conditions and unsafe behavior, as needed.
  • Act immediately to remove or resolve workplace hazards (i.e. fix/remove trip hazards, clear ice/snow on sidewalks/driveway, report issues/concerns to supervisor or OA on call).
  • Engage and participate in fire and weather safety drills per HBI policy.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.
  • Cooperate with Homeward Bound management on accident investigations, workplace inspections, and participate in safety training.

Leadership

  • Direct and coordinate others in the completion of necessary work activities to ensure excellent service delivery.
  • Maintain effective communication among staff, management, nursing, families and personnel from outside agencies as assigned and as necessary.
  • Apply best practices for allocating HBI resources (eliminate wasteful practices).
  • Assume additional responsibilities as requested and necessary to maintain program integrity.

Pay: From $15.25 per hour
