What are the responsibilities and job description for the Development Engineer II position at Honda?
Job Purpose
Create & execute development plans for both component and system level hardware development. Collaborate with design and simulation engineers to identify concepts which help achieve program targets. Create and execute test procedures, report back results and demonstrate first principles understanding of why concepts did or did not work to foster next steps.
Key Accountabilities
Development Planning :
Lead assigned development area through all steps from concept to application
Involves planning, report writing, coordination, data analysis, & making sound judgments and conclusions.
Collaborates with design, simulation & production on project direction, timing, and technical requirements for testing & validation.
Collaborate with project management group on scheduling of vendor lead times, testing dates and target application deadline
Development Testing :
Create bespoke test requests with clear objectives, expected results & procedures
Develop and release new test procedures as needed
Coordinate with test cell technician to set up and calibrate test instrumentation and communication software ranging from analogue inputs to CAN communication.
Work hand in hand with test cell technicians to execute testing for powertrain related hardware evaluations
Analysis :
Once test is complete post process the data. Review collected data both during and after completion of testing to ensure data quality. Take ownership & root cause analysis for problems & hardware failures in assigned area.
Trouble shoot and resolve issues encountered during testing
Facilitate organized transfer of test data for simulation correlation efforts
Reporting :
Effectively communicate results, conclusions and recommended next steps. Create clear and concise test reports for documentation. Provide regular communication on project and testing status. Present project results and planning at each stage of the development process in a format that is clear. Write technical reports of development testing and summaries of development projects. Develop detailed department manuals and procedures. Update and maintain database for assigned development projects.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
B.S. degree or equivalent work experience in mechanical engineering or related field, with an emphasis in internal combustion engines, electric motors, or gearboxes.
Minimum 3- 5 years experience with development and testing of powertrains including test planning, procedure writing, data acquisition and analysis.
Engineering discipline knowledge including control systems, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, statics and dynamics. Proficient presenting clear ideas, data, conclusions and communicates effectively in a technical environment. Technical report writing experience. Previous project management experience using MS Project. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work in a team environment. Ability to work under minimal supervision. Ability to be self-directed and can effectively work well under pressure in a diverse environment.
Experience with powertrain or chassis dynamometer testing, data logging hardware and software, and test instrumentation a plus
Proven ability to communicate technical information effectively both verbally and in written form to a wide variety of audiences. Ability to work in team environment under minimal supervision. Detailed oriented individual who can effectively work well under pressure in a culturally diverse environment.
