DEFINITION
Full journey level class within the Equipment Operator series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Senior Equipment Operator by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including operation of all regular and light equipment. Employees at this level receive general supervision from an assigned Road Foreman and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Employees may exercise functional or technical supervision over lower-level equipment operators or maintenance related workers.
IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES---Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Knowledge and ability to operate both light and some heavy equipment such as hydraulic excavator, maintainers, dump trucks, tractor-trailer trucks, front-end loaders, skid steer loaders, rollers, power-driven sweepers, and various other equipment for a variety of maintenance and construction operations.
2. Perform manual labor in maintenance tasks such as pothole/pavement edge repairs, trimming trees/brush, removal of debris from right of ways, fencing installation/repair, inspection/cleaning of drainage culverts, assist other department staff as required, and perform other duties as assigned.
3. Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; pick-up and deliver equipment from construction sites.
4. Install/maintain barricades and direct and control traffic around work sites.
5. Knowledge of operation/maintenance requirements of power-driven equipment. Operate such equipment in a safe manner. Inspect and perform preventive maintenance on equipment as required.
6. Knowledge of and/or the ability to learn practices, methods, and materials used in general road construction and maintenance tasks. Understand and follow oral/written instructions. Work independently in the absence of supervision.
7. Knowledge of and/or the ability to learn practices and methods of drainage for roadways.
8. Respond and perform public assistance during after work hours to sand, clear, or barricade roads during inclement weather.
9. Perform all other related duties as assigned.
ABILITY TO
1. Effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve working in high places, working closely with others, exposure to various weather conditions, exposure to noise, traveling from site to site, working in and near water including creeks and ditches, exposure to dust and dirt.
2. Effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to fumes and smoke, electrical hazards, confined workplaces, slippery and uneven surfaces, extremely loud noises, hazards associated with traffic control and working in and near traffic, inclement weather.
3. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: walking or standing for extended periods of time, lifting, and carrying heavy materials, climbing during assigned activities, performing heavy manual labor, operating assigned equipment and vehicles.
4. Maintain a good/insurable driving record.
Experience and Training Guidelines - Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Three to five years of experience performing maintenance work involving the operation of light and heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
Training:
High school diploma or GED.
License or Certificate
· Must have a valid Texas CDL with good driving record.
· Specialized certification in operation of heavy equipment may be required.
