Job Title: Jail Nurse
Supervisor: Jail Administration/Jail Physician
Normal Work Week: 12 Hour Shift
FLSA: Non-Exempt

Definition
The Nurse is responsible for holding inmate sick call. They shall create and maintain a professional and clean medical environment. Is responsible for making recommendations to the jail staff, as it would relate to the best medical welfare of the inmates.
Examples of Important Responsibilities and Duties—Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential duties and responsibilities:
1. Evaluates inmate medical status.
2. Provides or refers inmates to appropriate medical attention.
3. Distribute and Chart Medications
4. Conducts inmate and staff TB testing.
5. Completes and maintains TB testing records.
6. Audits inmate’s medications and Medical Files
7. Identifies controlled medications.
8. Performs cultures and urinalysis.
9. Performs drug testing
Other important duties and responsibilities:
1. Administers medication to inmates.
2. Examines inmates at their own request.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
· Must fulfill the employment standards of this position and comply with county policies, rules, and procedures including those communicated (verbally or in writing) to employees.
· May be required to perform other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibilities and requirements of the job.
Ability to:
· Must have the demonstrated ability to accurately assess an individual’s medical needs and provide the proper medical attention or referral.
· Must be able to inventory supplies on hand and advise the supervisor of any current or forecasted needs.
· Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and general public.
· Perform all other official duties.
Experience and Training Guidelines:Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:
· High School diploma or equivalent.
· Knowledgeable of TB testing and interpretation.
· Prior experience in a correctional setting is preferred.
License or Certificate
· Current valid Licensed Vocational Nurse or higher Certification.
Working Conditions
Environmental Conditions:
· This job is in a climate-controlled environment. Jail environment. Responding to emergency situations. Exposure to body fluids. May be exposed to armed/dangerous persons and communicable diseases.
Physical Conditions:
· May be required to assist non-ambulatory inmates.
