Definition: Supervise and maintain the safety and security of the inmates in the County jail while applying the Standards set by Texas Commission on Jail Standards as well as the constitution and laws of Texas and the United States. Guards inmates assuming the responsibilities for all respective needs of inmates during detention as well as applying all Jail Standards procedures as appropriate and maintaining correct and proper records on each inmate. Shall Present self to a higher standard and professionalism to insure the orderly running’s of the facility.
Examples of Important Responsibilities and Duties: Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Security Checks on inmates as needed per jail standards and department policy.2. Booking procedures such as booking in and out inmates, fingerprinting and photographing.3. Conducting hourly head counts.4. Dispensing medications to the inmates in the absence of medical staff.5. Serving meals and picking up trays from inmates.6. Supervising inmate activity.7. Maintaining logs and assuring accurate records of inmates.8. Transporting inmates. (Doctor, Court, Hospital, etc.)9. Monitoring visitation of inmates.
Other important duties and responsibilities:
1. Maintaining clean and organized work areas2. Dressing out inmates.3. Dispensing personal hygiene items to inmates.4. Transferring inmates between areas within the security area.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
1. Operations, services and activities of a County Jail.2. Basic computer use (word processing/ data entry.3. Must be able to work control room.4. Must be able to understand and operate radio activity, cameras, SCBA equipment, fire extinguisher/hose, and telephones.5. Building evacuation procedures.6. Minimum Jail Standards7. Department Policies.8. General safety precautions and awareness of hazards in the jail area
Ability to:
1. Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and general public.2. Perform all other official duties.
Experience and Training Guidelines: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be….
Training/Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
License or Certificate
- Ability to obtain TCOLE license within the first year of employment.
Working Conditions:
Environmental Conditions:
- Jail environment. Responding to emergency situations. Exposure to body fluids.
May be exposed to armed/dangerous persons and communicable diseases.
Physical Conditions
- May encounter a physical situation with an inmate, chasing fleeing prisoners, lifting and carrying moderate materials. Must be physically able to be involved in physical restraint abilities.
