What are the responsibilities and job description for the PLC Technician position at Hood Lumber?
Basic Purpose of the Position:
The PLC Technician will be responsible for troubleshooting all electrical, instrumental and process malfunctions, including mechanical power transmission equipment and hydraulic and pneumatic systems. This posting is for a 2nd shift position to provide support for the lumber mill.
Key Responsibilities:
- Troubleshoot electrical machinery and electrical control equipment throughout the plant (sawmill, planer, boiler-kiln areas).
- Coordinate working process with production and maintenance leadership team.
- Maintain technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and onsite training programs.
- Interpret PLC logic and make necessary modifications to get equipment functioning properly.
- Setup and operate test equipment to evaluate performance of developmental parts, assemblies, or systems under simulated operating conditions, and record results.
- Complete work orders as generated by auto system, leadership and management.
- Implement new control systems to improve equipment efficiency.
- Provide technical assistance and resolution when electrical or engineering problems are encountered before, during and after construction.
- Build, calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot or repair electrical instruments or testing equipment.
- Maintain critical program backups for all computer systems and PLCs.
- Conduct inspections for quality control and assurance programs, reporting findings and recommendations.
- Analyze and interpret test information to resolve design-related problems.
- Modify electrical prototypes, parts, assemblies or systems to correct functional deviations.
- Use precision measurement tools and equipment to calibrate and adjust equipment.
- Comply with government health, safety, and environmental guidelines, following all OSHA guidelines and regulations as required.
What you bring to the team:
- Strong knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers, preferably Allen Bradley or equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of Process Control Instrumentation
- Industrial electricity and motor controls and diagnostics experience.
- Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics and related controls.
- Previous experience with power distribution systems.
- Ability to use laser/thermal guns and temposonic/linear position sensors.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and diagrams..
- Troubleshooting skills (including locating and isolating problems, identifying and testing possible solutions and selecting effective approaches).
- Strong skills in use of PCs and maintenance systems.
- Ability to operate conduit tools and hand tools.
- Excellent technical aptitude.
- Good knowledge of plant processes.
- Good judgment with the ability to make timely and sound decisions.
- Proven safety and quality record.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Knowledge of NEC codes, electronics, variable frequency, and AC drives.
- General PLC/Electrical knowledge and skills to include but not limited to:
- Soldering, splicing, meter reading, AC motors/generators, DC motors, Schematics reading, SLC/PLC systems, electrical codes, laser scanning systems, sorting/stacking systems.
Required education/experience:
2-5 years of industrial electrical experience.
Electrical/Electronic/Automation technician diploma/degree/certificate considered an asset.
High school diploma or equivalent required. Associates degree is a plus.
Previous manufacturing experience required. Prior wood products experience preferred.
Knowledge of Internet, Excel and Word.
General knowledge of OSHA standards
Ability to work with a diverse workforce.
Must be able to work multiple shifts and weekends.
