Hood Industries, Inc. is a blend of wood manufacturing and distribution concerns that include plywood and lumber manufacturing plants, and twenty-three specialty wood product distribution operations, located in eighteen states serving the northeast, southeast and southwest United States.
We are seeking a Saw Filer Trainee at our lumber mill in Silver Creek, MS. This position is an entry-level position focused on learning the skills needed to maintain and repair various types of saws, knives, and saw guides ensuring optimal performance and safety. The role focuses on safely filing and maintaining saws, performing machine alignment, and conducting preventive maintenance on saw filing equipment. The ideal candidate is safety-oriented, self-motivated, and is willing to learn new skills and techniques.
Key Responsibilities:
- The trainee will learn to sharpen, maintain, and repair circular and band saw blades, knives (planer, chipper canter, profiler), and saw guides.
- Will assist experienced saw filers and learn to operate and maintain filing equipment, inspect saws, knives, guides for defects, and learn to repair and adjust.
- Will learn to perform preventive maintenance on saw filing and guide prepping machines, assist in saw/guide changing processes, and assist in knife changing processes. This includes lubrication, cleaning, and minor repairs.
- Trainee will learn to operate and maintain filing room equipment, such as grinders, sharpeners, tensioners, presses, hand tools, measuring tools, and any other related tools, ensuring they are functioning correctly and safely.
- The trainee will learn to assist with machine alignment, ensuring saws, guides, and knives are properly adjusted and installed.
- Adhere to all safety and environmental guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in the saw filing areas.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma/GED preferred.
- Minimum of 6 months of experience in a manufacturing environment required.
- Sawmill experience is an asset.
- Have an aptitude for learning mechanical skills. Mechanical aptitude test required
- Strong communication skills and ability to work well within a team or work independently.
- Exceptional attention to detail and precision in your work.
- Ability to use and read precision measurement devices.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to operate equipment safely and responsibly.
- Ability to understand, clearly communicate, and follow all safety rules and policies.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
Physical Requirements:
- Perform tasks such as walking, climbing steps, pushing, pulling, maintaining balance, kneeling, squatting, grasping, and standing for long periods.
- Willing able to work in a hot, cold, noisy, industrial environment.
- Able to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, or reach with body, arms, and/or legs.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. throughout the work shift.
