Position: Youth Sports Referee Instructor-Coach
Descriptive Statement:
This is a non-exempt, seasonal, part-time position, under supervision of the Recreation Supervisor. We are
seeking passionate and experienced Youth Sports Referee Instructor-Coaches to guide, support, and
develop new referees in our youth basketball program. The position will work closely with novice and
intermediate referees, providing training, feedback, and ongoing mentorship to ensure consistent and fair
officiating during games. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, a deep understanding
of basketball rules, and a commitment to fostering a positive, educational environment for young referees.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Mentorship & Training:
- Provide hands-on mentorship and feedback to youth sports referees before, during, and after games.
- Lead or assist in officiating clinics and training sessions for new referees.
- Help referees develop skills in game management, positioning, and decision-making.
Game Observation & Feedback:
- Observe referees during live games, offering constructive criticism and support.
- Provide post-game feedback to officials to enhance their performance and professional growth.
- Encourage a learning environment, focusing on the development of referees’ confidence and decision-
making abilities.
Rule Education & Clarification:
- Ensure all referees have a strong understanding of sport rules, regulations, and proper game
procedures.
- Be available to clarify rules and resolve disputes between referees during games, if necessary.
Ongoing Support:
- Be a resource for referees who may have questions or need guidance on specific scenarios.
- Foster teamwork and communication between referees and coaches, players, and other game
officials.
- Create a positive, supportive atmosphere that encourages continued referee participation.
Promotion of Ethical Conduct:
- Model and promote fair play, professionalism, and ethical behavior both on and off the field/court.
- Ensure referees understand the importance of impartiality, respect, and maintaining authority during
games.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Previous experience as a sport referee, preferably at the youth or amateur level.
- Strong knowledge of sport rules, game flow, and officiating techniques.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
- Experience in mentoring or coaching is a plus.
- Ability to remain calm, composed, and professional under pressure.
- Ability to commit to a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Work Schedule
Vary depending on the season (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer)
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Ability to move quickly and remain active during games.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and be physically active for extended periods.
