The Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District (HRVPRD) is seeking an enthusiastic, responsible, and organized individual to join our team as the Youth Chess League Coordinator. This position will lead and oversee the Youth Chess League program at one of four local elementary schools, providing children in the community with the opportunity to engage in chess and develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan, organize, and oversee the Youth Chess League for children Kindergarten - 5th grade, including coordinating weekly practice sessions and games.
Recruit, train, and manage volunteer chess coaches and assistants.
Assist the Recreation Supervisor create and distribute materials, such as tournament schedules, event instructions, and participant communications.
Foster a fun and supportive environment that encourages children to develop their skills and love for the game.
Ensure safety and proper conduct during all chess activities, and address any behavioral issues.
Collaborate with HRVPRD staff to promote the Youth Chess League and recruit participants.
Assist in managing league registration, participant information, and track progress throughout the season.
Report league results and provide feedback on program improvements to HRVPRD management.
Qualifications:
Previous experience in organizing or coordinating recreational programs, particularly for youth, is highly desirable.
Strong knowledge of chess, with the ability to teach the game and facilitate tournaments for beginners to intermediate players.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with children, parents, volunteers, and staff.
Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and solve problems creatively.
Must pass a background check as required by HRVPRD policies.
Availability to work afternoons (after school) and weekends as needed for league events and practices.
