What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chief of Police position at Hoopa Valley Tribe?
The Chief of Police will be responsible for the operation and administration of the department, and day to day supervision of those employees assigned including certified police officers, dispatchers, and administrative staff. This is a supervisory position. First time supervisor is required to serve a probationary period before their appointment becomes final.
- Associates Degree from an accredited college or university; preferably a Bachelor's Degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice, or a related field i.e., Public Safety, Political Science.
- Must be a graduate of a State or Federally recognized police academy, and possess an active P.O.S.T. certificate, or complete the course of training prescribed by POST and obtain the Basic Peace Officer Certificate by POST within the two years of appointment (Penal Code ).
- Employee is required to bear and maintain proficient use of firearms.
- Must be over 30 years of age and in good physical and mental health.
- Must have achieved the level of Police Lieutenant or higher in a similar sized or larger Police Department and maintained that level for a minimum of three years.
- Seven years of consecutive law enforcement service.
- Must pass a full law enforcement background investigation in compliance with California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST). No Felony or Domestic Violence Convictions.
