What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Information Officer position at Hoopa Valley Tribe?
Under the general supervision of the Tribal Chairman and/or Council, the Public Information Officer (PIO) will be responsible for communicating information to the public and media on behalf of the Tribe; primarily by writing press releases, managing crisis communication, coordinating media inquiries, and ensuring accurate and timely dissemination of information during critical events and routine operations. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies to inform the public about the Tribe’s initiatives and important updates. The PIO will be responsible for creating media campaigns that present the Hoopa Valley Tribe and its interests in a positive manner; performs professional marketing work, communicating through many types of media.
Responsibilities
1. Serves as a liaison between the Tribal government and the public and/or media.
2. Prepares Tribal elected officials and staff for public meetings and/or interviews.
3. Leading communication efforts during critical events or controversies; providing accurate and timely information to the public.
4. Develops and maintains a positive public image for the organization through public facing communication; utilizing many types of media.
5. Develop and implement communication strategies to inform the public about the Tribe’s initiatives and important updates.
6. Collect and verify information from relevant sources to ensure accuracy in communication.
7. Utilize social media platforms to disseminate information and engage with the public.
8. Writes, edits, plans and coordinates a wide variety of documents such as brochures, newsletters, fact sheets, and other communication materials to inform and educate the public.
9. Writes, reviews, and/or distributes press releases and other public-facing communication.
10. Responds to information requests from media contacts, with approval of the Tribal Chairman or Vice Chairman; in the absence of the Chairman.
11. Establishes and maintains positive relationships with media outlets, consumers, government employees, and public interest groups.
12. Develops and/or executes social media and content strategies to release information on the Tribe in a manner that will promote a positive public image.
13. May require videography, photography, use of publishing programs, and graphic design. Preparation of videos, as necessary.
14. Organize events such as press conferences, exhibitions, and press tours. Coordinate tours and/or interviews with other officials, agency reps and the media, as necessary.
15. Plan public strategies and campaigns.
16. Support the Office of Emergency Services and IC; prioritizing and issues notices, warnings, and alerts.

Qualifications
- Must have extensive knowledge of public relations principles and strategies.
- Ability to think quickly and make decisions under pressure during critical situations.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; graphic design software such as Adobe Illustrator, and/or Photoshop.
- Existing relationships with media outlets, preferred.
- Knowledge of the Hoopa Valley Tribe or the ability to “quick study” through research.
- Ability to demonstrate excellent public speaking skills. Must have confidence in delivering presentations and addressing large groups.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; demonstrating strong verbal and written communication abilities to effectively convey complex information clearly. Must have the ability to write in AP (Associated Press), the style that is customary for external publications.
- Must have excellent interpersonal and networking skills; with the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with media contacts and outlets.
- Must have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; efficiently managing multiple projects and deadlines.
- Proficient skills in computer use, software and photography.
- Bachelor’s degree (BA) in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related field, from an accredited university; AND, (2) two years of related experience, required. A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.

Pay: $85,000.00 per year
