A cemetery worker is responsible for ensuring the overall upkeep of the cemetery in a respectful and dignified manner. Tasks may include opening/closing graves, placing markers, and performing general landscaping duties such as weed eating, blowing down drives, raking, irrigation and installing headstones.
We are looking for a dedicated and hardworking Cemetery Worker to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the maintenance and care of cemetery grounds, ensuring that the environment is respectful and serene for visitors. This role involves a variety of tasks including landscaping, grave opening/closing, and general upkeep of the cemetery. The Cemetery Worker will also assist with the setup and teardown of funeral services, ensuring that all aspects are handled with the utmost respect and professionalism. This position requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and a compassionate demeanor. The successful candidate will work closely with other team members to maintain the beauty and tranquility of the cemetery, providing a comforting space for families and loved ones. Responsibilities
- Maintain and care for cemetery grounds, including mowing, trimming, and landscaping.
- Opening/Closing graves as needed and prepare burial sites according to specifications.
- Assist with the setup and teardown of funeral services.
- Ensure all equipment and tools are properly maintained and stored.
- Perform general maintenance tasks such as painting, cleaning, and minor repairs.
- Monitor and report any damage or vandalism to cemetery property.
- Assist visitors with locating gravesites and providing information.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and procedures. Brings safety concerns to Cemetery Foreman.
- Coordinate with funeral directors and other staff to ensure smooth operations.
- Participate in seasonal tasks such as snow removal and leaf collection.
- Provide compassionate and respectful service to grieving families and visitors.
- Operate and maintain machinery such as backhoes, mowers, and trimmers.
- Keep work vehicle clean and tidy.
- Assist with the installation and maintenance of headstones and markers.
- Ensure the cemetery is clean, orderly, and aesthetically pleasing at all times.
- Trash Removal – Collect ad dispose of litter and debris throughout the cemetery, maintain a clean and tidy appearance.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Physical Stamina: Able to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy objects, operating grounds maintenance equipment, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Previous experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or a related field.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to operate and maintain various types of machinery and equipment.
- Compassion and Sensitivity: Display empathy and understanding when dealing with grieving families and visitors, maintaining a respectful and compassionate demeanor at all times.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Reliability: Punctuality and dependability are essential, as the role requires adherence to a set schedule to ensure the cemetery’s ongoing upkeep.
- Basic knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional Saturdays
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks efficiently.
- Basic knowledge of horticulture and landscaping techniques. Familiarity with landscaping equipment and techniques including mowing, trimming, and planting.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.00 - $21.60 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
