JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Assistant Director of Accounting
REPORTS TO: Director of Accounting
JOB GOAL: To support and contribute to meeting the overall goals and responsibilities of the Finance Department
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited senior institution of higher education in Accounting, preferred
A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a progressive accounting environment
Governmental accounting experience preferred
Ability to proficiently use current technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information
Ability to work effectively in a team environment
Strong interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills
Ability to establish credibility with all constituents, effectively manage sensitive personnel issues, and be comfortable and effective working with all levels of an organization
Must meet applicable federal, state, and local certification/qualification requirements for the position
Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities
Assists with the identification and selection of new bookkeepers
Assists with local school bookkeepers, activity sponsors, PTO officers, and others as related to the day-to-day finance operations including but not limited to the following:
Provides training for new bookkeepers
Provides technical support and develops and conducts training
Monitors compliance
Audits procedures and provides recommendations for improving internal processes and controls
Assists Principals during the absence of a bookkeeper, filling in as needed
Coordinates and monitors compliance with policies and operating procedures for the Finance Department
Collaborates with school and district administrators regarding the source and use of funds
Collaborates with various departments regarding budget, actual expenditures, and adherence to applicable rules and regulations
Maintains accurate general ledgers of fund accounting and monitors transactions and variances
Assists with month-end and year-end reporting including, but not limited to, account reconciliation, analytical analysis, and preparation of journal entries
Provides leadership to support the financial operations throughout the District
Prepares various filings with the Internal Revenue Service and other governmental agencies
Assists with workshops to communicate changes in laws, software applications, and policies and procedures as needed
Attends workshops/seminars to keep informed of accounting changes or new policies and procedures implemented by the State Department of Education
Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws
Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s)
