JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Director of Accounting
REPORTS TO: Chief School Financial Officer
JOB GOAL: To direct, evaluate, and control the day to day operations of the Finance department while promoting and encouraging effective and efficient practices in compliance with Board approved policies, generally accepted accounting procedures, and applicable laws
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited senior institution of higher education in Accounting
A minimum of five (5) years’ management experience in a progressive accounting environment
Governmental accounting experience preferred
Ability to proficiently use current technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information
Ability to work effectively in a team environment
Strong interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills
Ability to establish credibility with all constituents, effectively manage sensitive personnel issues, and be comfortable and effective working with all levels of an organization
Must meet applicable federal, state, and local certification/qualification requirements for the position
Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities
Acts as a liaison for the Central Office to various software vendors and financial institutions, promoting and implementing best practices
Develops financial management guidelines that comply with current regulations and promotes cost controls and efficient practices
Coordinates and ensures compliance with policies and operating procedures for the Finance department
Collaborates with school and district administrators regarding the source and use of funds
Participates in training as required to maintain professional proficiency and makes recommendations to enhance policies, procedures, and internal controls
Develops and implements professional development training for local schools, department heads, and staff
Maintains accurate general ledgers of fund accounting and monitors transactions and variances
Coordinates month-end and year-end reporting including, but not limited to, account reconciliation, analytical analysis, and preparation of journal entries
Establishes policies and procedures for addressing changes in laws, regulations, and internal controls
Provides leadership to support the financial operations throughout the District
Collaborates with various departments, including all Federal Programs, regarding budget, actual expenditures, and adherence to applicable rules and regulations
Coordinates with the external auditors, preparing work papers and analysis as needed
Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws
Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s)
