What are the responsibilities and job description for the DeWitt Tennis Center - Head Varsity Coach & Staff Professional position at Hope College?

Coaching responsibilities include conducting the women's and men's tennis program in compliance with all NCAA, MIAA, and institutional rules and regulations, including but not limited to:

  • Managing successful day-to-day operations: budgeting, scheduling, travel arrangements, game day organization, and recommend and oversee the purchase of new tennis equipment, supplies and uniforms as needed
  • Development of the competition schedule
  • Recruitment and retention of quality student-athletes in accordance with NCAA, MIAA and institutional rules, regulations and guidelines
  • Organizing, preparing and executing effective practice and game strategies
  • Monitoring and nurturing student-athletes' academic and personal development
  • Provide a transformational experience for student-athletes
  • Supervising a part-time assistant coach
  • Representing the program and Hope College with sportsmanship, integrity and professionalism

Tennis professional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Teach tennis classes of all levels and ages as a part of the DeWitt Tennis Center programs
  • Recruit and maintain a private lesson clientele
  • Willingness to learn and apply new tennis teaching systems
  • Ability to work evening and weekend shifts throughout the year
  • Participate in the hiring process for all tennis staff
  • Attend at least one continuing education (convention) per year
  •  Assist in ball weeding as assigned by general manager
  • Assist in promoting the Hope College Summer Tennis Academy
  • Keep accurate attendance records of all classes you lead
  • Fill out a "vision sheet" for each weekly private lesson – give to parents
  • Learn and use the Club Automation website at the Tennis Center
  • Develop positive relationships with faculty, staff, students, media and alumni, while interacting successfully with department personnel and the college community.
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Coaching experience required, preferably at the collegiate level
  • Tennis professional teaching experience preferred
  • PTR and USPTA certification or willingness to attain such with 6 months of employment
  • Demonstrated organizational and management ability
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficient with technology applicable to the position
  • Knowledge of NCAA and MIAA rules and regulations
  • Appreciation for and understanding of NCAA D-III athletic philosophy
  • Strong ethical character
  • Understanding of and commitment to the Christian faith
  • An appreciation and understanding of diversity that includes a demonstrated track-record of working within multicultural communities
