Background on HYF & the Innovative Reading Program:
Hope for Youth and Families is a local family foundation and non-profit that is committed to supporting underserved youth and families and to addressing disparities in educational attainment, income, and life outcomes in Springfield, MA. In the Summer of 2024, we successfully piloted a reading intervention program. By leveraging the Science of Reading and innovative curriculum, we were able to help students make significant gains in their reading abilities, bringing students behind in reading to grade level. In just four weeks, over 65% of students demonstrated significant reading growth, with 25% achieving at least two grade levels of improvement.
The Role:
Are you passionate about supporting students towards success in middle school and high school?
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic educator to join our Innovative Reading team. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in educating middle and high school students to raise their reading level using the Science of Reading and innovative curriculum and materials.
Key Responsibilities:
- Attend training for teaching using the Science of Reading in conjunction with our innovative curriculum and materials.
- Review and prepare curriculum for the classroom prior to leading the class.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Manage student behavior.
- Differentiate instruction based on assessment data.
- Document interventions and progress on each student.
- Gather, compile, and share data with the Innovative Reading team.
- Work with the Innovative Reading team to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods and maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents/guardians and community members.
- Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Plan with assistant educator(s) to create strong supports for students in the classroom.
- Attend ongoing professional development monthly to support your classroom practice and meet with your supervisor for regular coaching meetings.
- Collaborate with partner schools to refine our support, align our program to their systems and tools and coordinate logistics for maximum access to students.
- Request support when necessary.
What You Bring: Qualifications, Competencies, and Commitments
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, or related field; degree in progress is acceptable
- Teaching certification; certification in progress is acceptable
- Previous experience working with youth and young adults of diverse backgrounds
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build rapport with students, families/caregivers, educators, and community partners
- Deep commitment to equity and ending disparity in access to quality education
- Commitment to and belief in continuous growth in your own work and learning, for the program and for the youth we serve
