What are the responsibilities and job description for the Therapist - Child-Parent Psychotherapy position at Hope for Youth?
Hope For Youth has a Therapist position open in its Intensive Prevention Services Program to Nassau County in collaboration with Nassau County Department of Social Services. This program, called HEART - Helping Enhance Attachments & Remain Together. The HEART program, assists with:

- Diverting a disruption of a family that will or could result in the imminent placement of a child in foster care;
- Enabling a child who has been placed in foster care to return to his/her family at an earlier time other than would otherwise be possible; or
- Reducing the likelihood that a child who has been discharged from foster care would return to such care.
This program utilizes Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), an intervention for children from birth through age 6 who have experienced at least one traumatic event, for example, neglect, family conflict or the sudden traumatic loss of someone close and as a result are experiencing attachment or behavior challenges. HFY will train in the model.
The primary goal of CPP is to support and strengthen the relationship between a child and his or her parent (or caregiver) as a vehicle for restoring the child's sense of safety, attachment, and appropriate affect and improving the child's cognitive, behavioral, and social functioning. While also supporting the
The program provides case management and therapeutic services to 50 clinical cases, shared amongst therapists, and provides additional case management for 100 cases annually. The treatment modalities used in the program are evidence-based. The current open position is for a CPP Therapist. Candidates should have experience working with both adults and children utilizing a trauma-focused lens. If not yet trained in the CPP model, CPP training will be provided. Hours accumulated can be used toward LCSW licensing.
Description of duties and responsibilities:
Therapist will be required to:
- Function within Agency's policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Manual.
- Function within the agency policy and procedure as outlined in the program guide and applicable codes of conduct.
- Support the child/family by providing them with the knowledge, skills and tools necessary in order achieve optimal family functioning.
- Carry a caseload of up to 12 families.
- Achieve outcomes as outlined in the program guide/narrative
- Flexible schedule to accommodate program.
- Participate in treatment team, case review, and other meetings.
- Work collaboratively with referral resources and any other agency working with the family and the court.
- Work as a part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Provide support for other projects and locations; travel as needed.
- Perform other resulting and necessary work to meet the needs and requirements of the clients, the program, Hope for Youth, oversight agency and any other regulatory obligations
Qualifications for position: Master's Degree and License Required (LMSW, LCSW, LMHC, LMFT)
Experience needed: Individual must have a minimum of one year's experience with Child Welfare and foster care; have knowledge in early childhood mental health, adult mental health, trauma-informed assessment and treatment to children and adults is preferred. Excellent written, verbal and computer skills. Knowledge of child serving systems.
Skills and knowledge required: A valid NYS driver's license in good standing, computer knowledge, ability to timely complete documentation and related paperwork. English/Spanish-speaking preferred. Physical Requirements: read/write reports and log entries, walking/standing/sitting for prolonged periods, bending/stooping, kneeling/squatting, climbing stairs, reaching overhead, repetitive wrist/finger movements, ongoing access to reliable vehicle and driving own vehicle for work.
Amount of travel and any other special conditions or requirements: This is a 40 hour/week exempt position. Background checks, including fingerprinting, Staff Exclusion List, Statewide Central Registry and Motor Vehicle Records; must drive own vehicle, climb stairs, lift up to 50lbs, be willing to attend home visits, work from various HFY locations, and conferences as needed.
