JOB DESCRIPTION – Department of Youth Services (Mt. Meigs,AL) Campus CAREER/LIFE COACH

Job: Career Life Coach

Supervisor: HIM DYS Site Director

Purpose:Provide holistic and comprehensive case management and career coaching services to all students including: intake assessment, development of short-term and long-term goals, development of realistic career plans, effective progress monitoring, and general advocacy and referrals regarding all issues affecting the progress of our current students and graduates.

Responsibilities:

(This Career Life Coach Position will be assigned at the Mt Meigs DYS campus but there will be occasions where the Career coaches will cross train and assist all campuses. Some of the outlined duties below are not specific to the DYS Campus but across the board)

  • Provide job and life skills training to participants of Hope Inspired Ministries (H.I.M.), following the established curriculum and guidelines for successful program progression (including H.I.M. Curriculum and A.C.E. / Alabama Career Essentials).
  • Conduct initial student interviews and assessments, including orientation and initial drug screening.
  • Actively recruit new students through various outreach activities, such as neighborhood canvassing, networking with partnering organizations, participating in local resource and job fairs, and public speaking.
  • Collaborate with a team to identify all barriers to current and future employment.
  • Develop action plans for students to guide and direct them in overcoming these barriers, and notify your supervisor in a timely manner of any barrier that might prevent a student's progress.
  • Assist students in implementing action plans and provide support as needed.
  • Develop partnerships with local businesses to connect students to internship and employment opportunities.
  • Maintain regular contact with students on internship to monitor progress and assist with any challenges.
  • Advocate for students facing barriers they cannot overcome on their own, such as issues with supporting agencies, legal matters, or chemical dependency treatment.
  • Offer general case management to help participants eliminate barriers in areas such as finding housing/shelter, securing proper identification (Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, Identification), transportation issues, and medical needs.
  • Ensure classroom supplies are stocked, including paper, pens, appointment slips, poster boards, snacks, etc.
  • Maintain an adequate supply of bus passes and drug screens by keeping inventory and placing orders to replenish in a timely manner.
  • Maintain detailed client records, including updated progress notes, completed assessments, and individual service plans.
  • Actively participate in regular staff meetings, training programs, and supervisory sessions, contributing to the development of positive team relationships.
  • Interact with guests and volunteers daily with a positive attitude and welcoming demeanor.
  • Conduct follow-up communications with graduates of the program to ensure they are progressing.
  • Conduct proactive activities in the community to include inside the Schools to lower the number of those who may potentially end up incarcerated

Qualifications and Desired Skill Sets

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or a related field is preferred; however, we also value a minimum of 2 years of case management or social service experience as an equivalent.
  • We are looking for someone with an outgoing, energetic personality who is self-motivated to identify barriers and assist students in overcoming them.
  • A culturally sensitive approach is important, along with an understanding of the issues, challenges, behaviors, and thought patterns faced by people living in poverty, dealing with substance addictions or mental health issues, and/or those with histories of incarceration.
  • Knowledge of community resources and counseling/social work practices with high-risk populations is essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is needed.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are important.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are also key to working independently with minimal supervision.

Travel Requirements: A valid Driver’s License and personal vehicle insurance are necessary. While a company vehicle is available, there may be instances where employees transport students to and from appointments in their personal vehicles.

Hours: This is a full-time position eligible for benefits as detailed in the Hope Inspired Ministries Policies and Procedures. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

Salary Range: Starting salary range starting at $34,000 with opportunities for growth and advancement.

Benefits: Individual Health Coverage paid for by Organization, access to 401K with a match of up to 3% and Life Insurance Plans after 90-day probationary period.

Morality Clause: An employee of Hope Inspired Ministries (HIM) can be dismissed due to any serious act of misconduct by employee, including (but not limited to) an act of dishonesty, theft or misappropriation of HIM property, moral turpitude, insubordination, or any act injuring, abusing, or endangering others or bringing public shame and/or ridicule to HIM.
