DESCRIPTION
The Transportation Specialist ensures the safe, efficient, and effective operation of the school division’s transportation services. This role involves coordinating bus routes, maintaining compliance with safety regulations, addressing transportation concerns, and supporting the daily operations of the transportation department. The Transportation Specialist serves as a liaison between schools, parents, and the transportation team, ensuring that transportation services meet the needs of students and the school community.
GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)
- Develop and coordinate bus routes and schedules to optimize efficiency and meet student needs.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations, including safety standards.
- Address transportation-related concerns and communicate effectively with parents, school staff, and drivers.
- Assist in the recruitment, training, and evaluation of bus drivers and transportation staff.
- Maintain accurate records of routes, schedules, student assignments, and vehicle maintenance.
- Conduct periodic inspections of buses to ensure safety and compliance.
- Respond promptly to transportation emergencies, including bus breakdowns or accidents, and assist in resolving issues.
- Verify and submit documentation regarding payroll, purchase orders, worker’s compensation claims, and other employee financial matters.
- Provide support for field trips, extracurricular activities, and special events requiring transportation.
- Utilize transportation scheduling software and technology to improve operations and communication.
- Collaborate with school administrators to address specific transportation needs or challenges.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor or department leadership.
SUPERVISION
The Transportation Specialist reports directly to the Transportation Supervisor or designated administrator.
WORK CONDITIONS
The Transportation Specialist works in both office and field environments, with responsibilities that may require occasional outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
