What are the responsibilities and job description for the SAFETY SPECIALIST position at Hornady?
Immediate opening for a Safety Specialist at Hornady Manufacturing. This new position will facilitate health and safety initiatives for OSHA, EPA, or NDEE compliance programs at the Hornady West location, 6 miles west of Grand Island, NE. The Safety Specialist reports to the Safety Manager and will work within the compliance department with safety, environmental and other compliance professionals.
Responsibilities:
- Participate in developing safety policies and procedures in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations. Read, analyze, and interpret complex documents (such as OSHA regulations).
- Assist in planning and implementing programs to train employees in worksite safety practices, fire prevention, and correct handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, equipment, and other materials.
- Conduct New Employee Orientation sessions weekly with HR and present on various safety related topics to employees, management, and public groups.
- Perform environmental inspections and audits, prepare waste shipments, and update chemical inventories.
- Inspect organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determine corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follow-up to ensure measures have been implemented utilizing the HITS system for recording purposes.
- Perform daily, weekly, monthly and annual inspections, including monitoring chlorine usage, drinking water testing, and water filter changes.
- Provide signs, posters, barriers, and other information to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions.
- Assist with investigations of safety and health incidents and complaints.
- Active participation with company safety committees.
- Represent the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs.
- Maintain safety files and training records within an established system.
Ideal candidates will possess a 2-year degree/certificate in a safety related field or at least two years of applicable experience in a manufacturing setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Consideration may be given to candidates possessing significant manufacturing experience with substantial safety-related responsibilities. The Safety Specialist should possess strong communication skills and reasoning abilities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel and Word) is essential.
