Hornblower is seeking a Marine Diesel Technician - Field Superintendent for our Shipyard operation in Bridgeport CT.

This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody Hornblower’s RESPECT Service System.

About the Opportunity:

This is a leadership position at Hornblower Shipyard, ensuring that proper work is done to install, repair, and replace marine machinery and equipment on commercial vessels, and that warranty submittals occur correctly.  The Marine Diesel Technician – Field Superintendent will be managing onsite teams, and leading from the front, demonstrating the ability to conduct maintenance and repair work as well as mentoring and overseeing its completion.   This person is responsible for positive and successful interactions with internal and external clients, the Production Manager, service technicians, and department heads. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversees onsite operations and handles scheduling of crews who are completing services to meet objectives and goals.
  • Prepares estimates and parts lists for upcoming services.
  • Interacts between clients (internal and external) on upcoming and ongoing projects.
  • Handles Warranty administration submittals for internal and external clientele.
  • Oversees and conducts heavy machinery maintenance and repair work including engine valve gear timings, injector changes, cylinder head and liner overhauls. This may also include machinery rigging in and out of vessels.
  • Oversees and performs vessel electrical troubleshooting and repair of generators, motors, control systems, sensors and related wiring. This may include low voltage and battery powered starting, control, electronic control and monitoring systems.
  • Observes dry dock repairs at the shipyards of the vessel drive lines, water jets, couplings, propellers, rudders, and shafts, supporting shipyard personnel and/or the Production Manager.
  • Works alongside and supports OEM service technicians.
  • Responsible for testing and inspecting installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials.
  • Provides accurate and comprehensive take-offs and material lists for repairs and overhauls.
  • Documents and monitors maintenance and repair work through the company’s web based and structured maintenance and repair program.
  • Participates in computer-based monitoring and input of maintenance tasks, work hours, and company training and documentation programs.
  • Assists the Lead Mechanic with movement and installation of Marine Equipment, Construction Materials, and tools.
  • Assists with general operations of the yard, including but not limited to:
    • Removal of vessels from water using movable lift crane
    • Moving vessels in the yard
    • Positioning and securing blocking at the bottom and sides of the vessel according to size, weight, and weight distribution of vessels, using fasteners, hand tools and power tools
  • Follows established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean environment.
  • Works the hours and shifts assigned by the Production Manager. This may include weekend or evening shifts and occasional overtime. The Production Manager will make efforts to balance these shifts and occasional overtime with every employee’s need for rest, relaxation, and family time.
  • Communicates ideas for improving company processes with a positive and constructive attitude.
  • Conducts themself with a positive and contagious attitude for others to emulate.
  • Keeps the PM and others informed about project status and issues that may impact client relations.
  • Travels to projects sites within US and internationally as needed.
  • Additional job duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Must have 3 years’ experience working in the marine or construction field
  • Experience working on construction sites and with power tools
  • Knowledge of construction site best practices and safety procedures
  • Experienced with motor vessel machinery troubleshooting, maintenance and repair - on vessels such as work boats, tugs, fishing vessels, passenger vessels, or vessels of the U.S. Armed forces and/or diesel or heavy machinery mechanics from and trades institution, U.S. Armed forces, or other industries that require hands on repair of engines and engine related systems is preferred
  • Basic computer skills as well as the ability to safely communicate with others in English
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to travel to jobs at different sites
  • Must thrive in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong organizational skills
  • Team player and have ability to work independently, self-motivating
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to interact effectively with all levels throughout Company organization
