Position Overview
The Basketball Data Scientist will assist the basketball operations department by utilizing data to provide insights to enhance decision-making across both the front office and the coaching staff. The Basketball Data Scientist will be a part of the Basketball Analytics Department.

In this role you will :
Design and develop tools and advanced statistical models to communicate insights to members of the organizationCollaborate with other members of the analytics department to creatively bring quantitative-driven research to assist in scouting, front office, coaching, performance, etc.Participate in team meetings and strategy sessions, providing data-driven insights to support player development and game planningAssist in the creation and maintenance of data processes and user-interfacesOther duties as designated by managerRequired Skills, Experience and Abilities
To perform the job successfully, you will have or demonstrate the following skills and abilities :
Experience working with large data in an industry, research, or sports settingPractice working with large or messy data in a scripting language (Python, R)Ability to build, maintain, and query data from a relational database (ideally, SQL)Experience developing statistical or machine learning models using modern frameworks (Python, R, PyTorch, Keras, scikit-learn, etc.)Software development skills working on ETL processes or web applications (React) are beneficialAn understanding and passion for the game of basketball and a knowledge of modern basketball analytics and researchAbility to work in a collaborative setting and communicate technical concepts to non-technical peopleFlexibility to adapt to frequently changing work environment, and deliver on challenging demandsInterpersonal skills – ability to maintain confidentiality, listens to others, and willing to try new ideasExcellent critical reasoning skills with the proven ability to partner across functionally and effectively build linksExcellent communication skills including written and verbal; ability to communicate ideas clearly and conciselyPresents self in professional manner and have ability to interact with all levels of the organization and outside contactsAvailable to work a variable schedule, including holidays, nights, weekends, and Hornets gamesAdditional Information
