General Job Description
Under limited supervision, assist in the management and planning of the daily activities of the Fleet Maintenance Department. This position is responsible for ensuring proper supervision, delivery, and administration of the maintenance and repair of County-owned and operated automotive and heavy equipment. Additionally, it ensures all work is conducted within budgetary constraints and in accordance with County policies, industry codes, and quality standards. The role also includes responsibility for customer relations, process improvements, personnel management, and Fleet Maintenance support for emergency and disaster response.
- Oversee Shop Operations: Direct the operation and repair of all vehicles and equipment across all shops, including light-duty, heavy-duty, and technical vehicle repairs. Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and safety regulations.
- Repair and Work Order Oversight: Review completed work for accuracy and completeness, offering guidance and making recommendations for improvements as necessary.
- Equipment and Product Procurement: Obtain price quotes on shop equipment and supplies, meeting with sales representatives to discuss and assess product needs. Manage the purchasing process for tools and equipment.
- Staff Management: Supervise, direct, and evaluate assigned staff, addressing employee concerns and issues, directing work, providing counseling, and completing performance appraisals. Lead the team in resolving any technical challenges and maintaining high-quality service.
- Cost Allocation & Budget Management: Assist with department budget oversight and make recommendations for cost-saving strategies to the Director.
- Professional Development & Industry Knowledge: Attend meetings, seminars, and workshops to stay current on industry trends, standards, and best practices. Apply new knowledge to improve department operations and service delivery.
- Emergency Response: Be available to respond to emergency repair calls or service needs as required, ensuring fleet readiness during critical situations.
- Operational Equipment Use: Operate a variety of equipment including vehicles, machinery, and other shop-related equipment (e.g., radios, copiers, computers, calculators, and telephones).
- Continuous Improvement: Demonstrate a commitment to improving operations, reducing turnaround times, increasing productivity, and streamlining work processes. Foster a collaborative work environment that enhances department performance and customer service.
- Other Duties as Required: Perform other related duties as assigned to support the department’s operations.
- Act as Director in Absence: In the Director’s absence, act as the lead in managing departmental operations, making high-level decisions, and representing the department.
- Requires a high school diploma or GED, supplemented by vocational/technical training in equipment operation and repair supplemented by six (6) years of previous experience in and/or training involving heavy equipment operation and repair; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities. Must possess and maintain a valid SC driver’s license.
