Handi-Riders, Inc., DBA: HorsePower, a non-profit organization established in 1984, has been providing life-changing therapeutic equine-assisted therapies to individuals with disabilities in the Sioux Empire for over 40 years. We are seeking a Hippotherapist, who will play a key role in delivering personalized therapy services to pediatric clients, using the horse as the dynamic surface for treatment, under your active South Dakota physical or occupational therapist license. This is a part-time subcontractor position, with flexible hours and the opportunity to provide your services in a supportive and dynamic environment.
As a Hippotherapist, you will be responsible for assessing clients’ needs, creating individualized treatment plans, and conducting therapy sessions to achieve therapeutic goals. You will work closely with our staff, volunteers, and Executive Director to ensure the highest level of care for participants. The ideal candidate will have experience in Hippotherapy or a strong interest in learning, comfortable familiarity and experience with horses, and a passion for supporting individuals with disabilities.

Working Conditions are in an unconventional setting. Care will be provided on and off the horse, using traditional modalities and hippotherapy techniques, in a barn/sand and dirt arena setting. Temporary office conditions currently. Requires strenuous physical exertion and/or physical strain, along with the ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time. The ability to lift in excess of 50 pounds, manipulate clients on the backs of horses, and safely mount and dismount clients, is necessary.
Qualifications
- A degree in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, or a related field is preferred.
- An active PT or OT license in the state of SD is required.
- Certification in Hippotherapy or equivalent experience is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of equine behavior and handling techniques.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with clients, families, and team members.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Compassionate demeanor with a genuine interest in helping others achieve their therapeutic goals.
- Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities or special needs is a plus.
