The Pre-Construction Engineer plays a critical role in driving the success of Horwitz by securing mechanical construction projects through strong client relationships and effective pre-construction management. This position is key to both business development and ensuring a smooth transition from pre-construction to execution. The Pre-Construction Engineer is expected to embody and promote Horwitz’s core values of being Safe, Accountable, Professional, Motivated, Can Do, and Curious, contributing to the company’s goals of safety, customer satisfaction, and profitability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide guidance and training to Project Engineers in our Preconstruction and engineering team(s), helping them grow into future preconstruction managers and or designers. Offer hands-on learning opportunities, share industry best practices, and support their professional development through structured mentorship and real-world project involvement.
- Create different engineered options for clients based upon the project goals and priorities
- Size and select all large Mechanical Equipment such as Chillers, Air Handling Units, Boilers, etc
- Maintain and develop relationships with general contractors and building owners.
- Focus on maintaining customer satisfaction, especially in design-build/design-assist projects in the semiconductor, life science, cleanroom, pharmaceutical, healthcare and mission critical market sectors
- Oversee and coordinate with the Horwitz Engineering team on projects to ensure the project is delivered as promised
- Collaborate with the estimating team to provide and review design assumptions during the estimating phase of the project.
- Work with the Horwitz Engineering Team to create a set of Contract Documents that meets the project goals.
- Assist Preconstruction Managers and the Horwitz Engineering Team with the design and equipment selection process on awarded work.
- Review Revit Model for progress, review Load Calcs, review plans prior to being issued for Permit or Construction
- Provide oversight and review on projects as needed prior to releasing projects for fabrication (focus on Mechanical Rooms, Coil Connections, etc)
- Represent Horwitz in all interactions with general contractors, owners, architects, engineers, and trades during the pre-construction phase.
- Oversee the creation of mechanical construction documents that meet both project requirements and budget constraints.
- Ensure the profitable procurement of large equipment.
- Facilitate a smooth handoff to the construction team while maintaining a presence throughout the project to ensure alignment with Horwitz’s goals of safety, customer satisfaction, and profitability.
Skills and Education:
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, including cost estimation and design.
- Sales acumen with a proven history of success in mechanical construction sales and/or engineering.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
- 3 years of experience in mechanical system cost estimating, design, and construction.
