Job Summary:
The Director of Finance is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the financial health of the contracting company. This role focuses on strategic financial management, project cost control, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in construction finance, including project accounting, cost analysis, and compliance. The Director of Finance will ensure financial stability while supporting the company’s growth objectives.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
1. Financial Leadership:
- Develop and execute financial strategies aligned with the company’s objectives and market opportunities.
- Act as a financial advisor to the CEO and executive team, providing insights on profitability, risks, and growth opportunities.
- Oversee cash flow management to ensure adequate liquidity for ongoing operations and project funding.
2. Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Lead the annual budgeting process, including setting benchmarks for project and operational expenses.
- Monitor and analyze project budgets, ensuring accuracy in cost estimation and reporting.
- Provide financial forecasts, including revenue projections, project cost trends, and profitability analyses.
3. Construction Finance and Project Costing:
- Oversee the financial aspects of all construction projects, including bidding, revenue recognition, and job costing.
- Work closely with Superintendents and Project Managers to track costs, identify overruns, and implement corrective actions.
- Evaluate project performance metrics, including earned value, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, and gross margins.
4. Financial Reporting and Compliance:
- Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and other financial standards, as well as state and federal regulations.
- Coordinate audits, tax filings, and other regulatory requirements.
5. Risk Management:
- Identify and mitigate financial risks related to project execution, contracts, and operational practices.
- Implement internal controls to safeguard company assets and reduce exposure to fraud or errors.
- Evaluate insurance coverage and oversee claims related to construction activities.
6. Stakeholder Collaboration:
- Collaborate with superintendents, project managers, estimators, and operations teams to ensure financial alignment across departments.
- Build relationships with external stakeholders, including banks, investors, auditors, and clients.
- Prepare financial presentations for executive leadership, and board meetings.
Education/Certifications/Licenses
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field (required). CPA, CMA, or MBA (strongly preferred).
Experience
- 10 years of experience in finance or accounting, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Extensive experience in construction or contracting industries, including project-based accounting and cost management.
- Proven success in managing multi-million-dollar budgets and financial operations.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Deep understanding of construction accounting principles, such as percentage of completion and WIP reporting.
- Proficiency in construction-specific financial software.
- Advanced skills in Excel, financial modeling, and data visualization tools.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on accuracy and efficiency.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills to interact with stakeholders at all levels
- Ability to develop long-term financial strategies that align with the company’s goals.
- Precision in managing complex financial data and ensuring regulatory compliance.
- Proven ability to lead and motivate a team while maintaining accountability.
- Deep understanding of the construction/contracting industry, including market trends and challenges.
