Job Summary: The Medical Biller is responsible for processing and managing medical claims, ensuring accurate billing, and addressing issues related to payments and reimbursements. This role involves working with patient records, insurance companies, and healthcare providers to facilitate the billing process and resolve discrepancies.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
- Review and process medical claims based on patient records, diagnoses, and procedures.
- Prepare and submit claims to insurance companies and other payers using electronic and paper methods.
- Ensure that all claims are submitted in compliance with payer guidelines and regulations.
- Verify that all charges, codes, and patient information are accurate and complete.
- Work with medical coders to ensure that diagnoses and procedures are correctly coded.
- Address any coding issues or discrepancies that may affect billing.
- Follow up with insurance companies and patients to address billing issues, denials, or underpayments.
- Provide information and support to patients regarding their bills, insurance coverage, and payment options.
- Resolve disputes and answer inquiries related to billing and claims.
- Monitor and track outstanding accounts and ensure timely follow-up on unpaid claims.
- Process patient payments, adjustments, and refunds accurately.
- Reconcile patient accounts and ensure that all transactions are recorded properly.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of billing and payment activities.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, payer policies, and privacy laws (e.g., HIPAA).
- Assist with audits and provide documentation as needed.
- Generate and review reports on billing activities, claim status, and financial performance.
- Analyze billing data to identify trends, issues, and opportunities for improvement.
- Work closely with healthcare providers, billing departments, and insurance representatives to resolve billing issues and improve processes.
- Participate in meetings and training to stay informed about changes in billing practices and regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned by manager.
Education/Certifications/Licenses
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s degree in Health Information Management, Medical Billing and Coding, or a related field is preferred.
- Medical Biller certification required or willing to get certified within 6 months from date of hire.
Experience
- Experience: Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in medical coding.
- Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software is preferred.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, billing codes (CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS), and insurance processes.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in billing and data entry.
- Proficiency in Google Suite and billing software.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with patients and insurance representatives.
- Good organizational and time-management skills.
- High level of professionalism and integrity.
- Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
